A Real Cross Cut Saw
Since this is the home made tools forum... here is a home made tool.
Last week, I went up to the Murray to fix the computer gaging system on a red gum sleeper mill,
And this magnificent bit of ingenuity caught my eye.
The operation is all hydraulic, the blade is driven by a hydraulic motor, and can be raised and lowered as well as driven in and out.
The idea is to cut logs to length before the go into the main mill.
I have no idea what OH&S would have to say, but, they don't come around this neck of the woods much.
Regards
Ray

Hi Anne-Maria,
Yes I see what you mean, I think you have to remember to retract the blade fully before
turning.. The position it's in there is about half way out. Could be a bit interesting if the saw starts chomping into the tyres.

Ray
Then again it could be good for city traffic, it would bring a whole new dimension to the phrase, "he cut me off"

"Nup, I swear I did it last time... It's your bloody turn to hold the log steady"
I dunno Ray.. I'm not so much impressed by the ingenuity of the machine rather than the ingenuity that must have been involved in convincing someone to run the thing.
why am I having images of that sausage from the sawstop promo?

I wonder if they make "saw stops" that size.

I can't see the blade guard. It must have been removed for clarity in the photo

Looks a bit like the old "widow maker" type saw probably get the same results.

how is this faster than a chainsaw?
it may be a tad safer than the old mobilco saws.

Hi Weisyboy,
Having not seen it in operation I couldn't say. But I think it likely to have a lot more horsepower than a chainsaw.
They cut several hundred logs per day, I would hate to be the guy on the end of a chainsaw doing that.
Safety wise, how would you say it compares with a chainsaw?

Ray
I think I definitely need this machine in my workshop...
