    Is a Harbor Freight dial guage just as good as a more expensive model for use in squaring a saw fence?

    Yes, you are not measuring anything but using it to compare from front to back. You don't even need a DI, it can be done with a fixed point and feeler gauges, it just takes more time and is a bot more fiddly.
