A new Drill Deck
...and the joys of having a Thicky/Jointer at last
The 600x400 deck is Jarrah mounted onto the travelling table (which is the best thing ever) and the fence is Mountain Ash. I also made a taller fence, but it just has a single T-track on top.
A bit of detail:
- A couple of Woodpecker's Flip Stops which I haven't used yet, but I think will be really useful and work well.
- The DRO from eBay is for depth control - I've had this for about 6 months and just LOVE it!
- Incra Lexan rule stuck with PSA spray.
- Veritas Cam Clamps to secure the fence (it can move back and forth by 130mm)
- Bessey Toggle Clamp (25mm variable thickness capability with no adjustment to the clamp). I love this thing too - so quick to use, and immensely strong (500kgs force apparently, and that can be quickly adjusted). I made the white base for it with a parabolic arc so I can pivot the clamping spot either side of the drill bit without changing the clamp to a different track. You can see that bolts securing it are very long - this is so that I can slip another block underneath it really quickly to clamp up to 90mm thick.
- Finished with Danish Oil 50:50 Gum Turps and hard burnished. (oh no, now the Oil Policeman will be along)
There were a few little cockups along the way
, but it's the recovery that counts, right?

BRETT!! TAKE THAT JARRAH DECK AND GET IT OUT OF THAT SHED NOW!!!
Take it into the lounge room and only use coasters. It truly is too good to be used in the shed....its a piece of quality furniture!!
It will be another thing to check out in person when I go down your wayJust do it!

Well thank you chaps! How well it all works is yet to be determined - the only thing I've drilled so far was the second fence (had to use the previous deck for the first fence). This is the third incarnation, and more than likely will be the second last.

That's a bit of a curve ball Dale. I purchased three pieces of Jarrah - one for the deck $49 (reduced because of a bit of surface checking) and two other pieces for Ron ($33 each). However, as it turned out the checks got much worse as I thicknessed the timber, and it was well out of flat which meant I lost several mm. This was the first cockup. The recovery was to use the other two pieces of Jarrah in a laminate, and they are the top pieces with the nice grain and colour. Not so bad overall because I got back up to the thickness that I originally wanted (about 40mm). Even if the original board had been flat it was only going to be about 30mm. I set out to buy a 50mm thick board but couldn't find what I wanted (thickness ok, length wrong or boring timber etc etc).
Note to self: Do NOT buy timber at a reduced price because of a few surface checks.
The Mountain Ash was on hand, and not much used.
Half a dozen Dominos at maybe 10c each.
T-track: 1½ lengths of Veritas single for the deck, so about $25. Half a length of Woodpeckers Double track - can't remember the price, maybe $15-18 - had it for a couple of years waiting.
Flip stops are $10 each.
DRO was about $43
Cam Clamps $6 each
Bessey Toggle Clamp about $25
