Default Festool Domino Look a Like

Ingenious copy of the Festool Domino......only a lot cheaper
link to you tube: Portable Mortising Router - part 1 - YouTube

The Festool Domino 500 (the smaller unit) retails around $1400 here in Aus. So this home brew version certainly can save you money but is it as accurate, versatile and easy to see as the Festool unit????

I wonder if he used a CNC to cut his parts?

    Cheers

I really like this idea. I'm wanting a Domino but can't justify it's cost for occasional use. I'd imagine the accuracy will be dependant on how well you can make the parts. A CNC would definitely help but it's doable by hand if you take care. If you don't get the results you want then it's just a matter of recutting the parts better and it's not going to cost more than a few bucks to have a go. With a table saw and router, construction would be quite simple. I can't see anything fancy being required.

Yes it's hard to justify a Domino unless you are into serious furniture construction on a daily basis. You can always use tried and proven tenon and mortise, biscuit and dowells with joinery. Still if like to make gadgets this home built Donino look-a-like might be the shot

Brilliant tool, brilliant video's, just brilliant this guy is up there with Mathias, if you had a burnt out Biscuit Jointer the front section would easily adapt to a timber frame.

There are a few Domino 'work-a-likes' out in the marketplace.

The JessEm Zip Slot Mortiser uses a drill with a 'special' bit - just plunge into the work piece then rotate a handle to swish the rotating bit back and forth.

Then there is the 'Mortice Pal', which is a bit pricey for what is really a simple router jig.

The Bead-lock jigs are designed to use specially fluted stock - you can make your own with a special bit or just use a chisel to flatten the sides of the hole.

There is a video (& plans available I think) from Stumpy Nubs - along with a rant about Festool owners!
