Nice work Ian, and very well finished too!

They [jaw inserts] should be a bit higher to allow angling the file down more easily when filing fleam on crosscuts, so I'll replace them someday (within the next 20 years!).
Yep that was my problem with the first one I made as well. I then discovered some bits of 100 mm wide jarrah skirting under the house with a decent splay angle for filing. For those that haven't seen mine here's a link back to it.

    Ian,

Well done - I too have copied your photos and have put it in my "Projects to copy" file!! Thank goodness there are others who have a 20+ yr plan for these types of projects!!.

Just a question about the wooden thread - did you make it with a tap and dye (like the ones Carba-Tec have) or another way - i.e. Beall tool company threader?

    Thanks

Thornburn - thanks. Yes, well, I'm old enough to be realistic about my schedules, these days. I have several other things that I plan to do "sumday", which may or may not get done before I'm too decrepit to shuffle to the shed. I also have several things like the saw vise that were made quickly to see if the concept worked ok, which I am still using 20 plus years down the track. "Sumday" I may get around to making the really fancy replacement I would like to leave to the grandchildren.

WRT the wooden screw, I have taps of various sizes, some bought, some home-made. The 1" tap used here was whipped up for me by a friend who is a dab hand on a metal lathe (which I am definitely not!). My threader works on the same principle as the Beall threader, but it's also home-made (very easy!). I described it in a longish post here a few years ago. Let's see if I can find it quickly......

Yep - what a marvel this BB is!

There you go - if you need any more info, just ask.

    Cheers,

Mine was inspired by a picture of an old wooden vise I saw on some web page or other - I can't remember where. It just looked so elegantly simple I thought it worth a go. I'll attach the original picture - hope it won't infringe anyone's copyright, but it's worth looking at...

    Cheers,
As long as the picture didn't come from Alice's site you should be OK

I to will add it to the ever growing list of onedayimgunnado projects.
    Cheers
