Default HNT Gordon Jack Plane Kit

Well it's sort of hand made.
This was a purchase at the woodworking show and I thought I would document it's assembly.
It is the HNT Gordon Jack Plane Kit and comes with everything you need to make your very own plane. There is some scope for customisation but this one will be kept fairly basic.
The first photo is the contents of the kit.
The timber is Gidgee and the blade is tool steel.
The second photo is the plane body glued up and clamped. The instructions said to use two small clamps to hold it all together while the glue dried but I'm sure that is a misprint and it should have said six clamps
Those were the droids I was looking for.

Excellent! Grabbing a seat and the popcorn...

Get thinner clamps, you can fit more on

Good point about the thinner clamps Groggy. I reckion it needed around four more but I thought I would throw caution to the wind and just go with six. I really wanted to get out the new Jet clamps but I would have only been able to fit one on

After I'd finished my chores I did manage a bit of time in the shed.

Glue has dried and the clamps are off. I cut off the ends of the dowels and planed the sides flat.

The bandsaw made short work of the initial shaping after I had carefully cleaned up the mouth and bed with a small chisel.

A rasp, the linisher and some sandpaper smoothed off the rough edges

My large piece of granite benchtop with some sandpaper on was used to flatten the sole and make sure the sides were at 90° to the sole. Started on 120 grit and moved to 240 to finish.

Next the brass abutments were fitted and glued in place. When the glue was dry the brass nuts protruding from the sides were filed flat and the sides smoothed on the granite plate again

I then started to shape the wedge. I used the sandpaper on the granite to do all the shaping, constantly trying the fit in the plane to get it spot on.

Once I was happy with the fit I installed the sharpened blade, that required a bit of work to remove the grinding marks,

and gave it a bit of a test run on a piece of silky oak I had in the scrap pile
Cuts beautifully, making very thin full width shavings.

The top of the wedge was chamfered to stop it from splintering when it is tapped in with the mallet and the inside legs were chamfered to assist with ejection of the shavings. The front handle was fitted and a few more test runs ensued.

It can also be used as a scraper with the balde installed bevel up

Some final sanding with 400 grit tomorrow and a couple of coats of BLO and it is done.
A nice weekend project that was quite straight forward and reasonably easy to do with minimal tools required. The Gidgee is lovely to work and IMO looks great. The finished product is a top quality plane that will see a lot of use in my shed. I plan on building a shooting board specifically for this plane as well.
If anyone is considering the HNT style planes, I recommend this kit as an inexpensive and fun way to give them a go. You won't be sorry you did.

All finished. Sanded, two coats of BLO thinned with turps and a generous dollop of UBeaut trad Wax. Although I said I would sand to 400 grit I may have sanded to 1200. But it is soooo smooth.
Gave it a work out on something a bit harder than Silky Oak. A nice chunk of Redgum.
Worked beautifully. Gave me a chance to play with the new HNT smoother as well.
A great pair. Both planes are a joy to use and I can see them being used often.

Well done, good job for a sparkie
I only did Friday this year, get in early, buy up all the good timber and leave
Had to get back and make more objet d'art for the exhibition. Going well, on a roll, lots of good stuff happening.
