wanted: Ideas for home made depth gauge
I wish to make a depth gauge for use on my table saw and router table.
I have a commercially available single upright one (made in asia) but it was too inaccurate.
Has anybody done the deed and made one and prepared to share their ideas?

i saw it some where
Hi,
I saw it somewhere.
Only accuracy required is the dimension X which has to be same on both block and pin. Screw is there to just hold pin in position. Block can be made out of metal or wood.
It is simple yet accurate. It can work as hight gauge as well as depth gauge.
rest of accuracy depends on the measuring instrument you have.
Hope this helps.

Arthur,
I have been going to make something up using my digital calipers - not all that expensive and are easy on the eyes. At the moment I have a crude wooden mount with a magnet glued into the base, that holds the caliper in place. A wooden piece that slides over the upper arm of the caliper to extend its reach. Works ok but lacks precision because of the sloppiness. I plan to machine it up out of wood and metal where needed - time is the problem.
Pleased if you come up with something better.
cheersDr Dee

I just use a digital vernier slide caliper, gives you an accuracy of within .01mm!
If theres on imediate table/insert area around the blade/bit to measure from slide a steel rule next to the blade, then add the thickness of the rule to the final measurement.....................................................................

Here's one I made
http://www.dotphoto.com/Go.asp?l=joh...ID=2294798&T=1
It's pretty simple and much like some of the other guages being discussed here. What I like about it is that it's free standing. You can place it over the blade or bit and then raise or lower the blade until you dial in just the right setting.
Of course, most of you will scoff at the absence of any millimeters on the scale.

I got as far as making up a 0.1mm vernier window for mine.
Don't know what the heck I am going to do with it now, but I will try and fit it in somewhere.
Might have another bash at it tomorrow. See what pops out.

thanks junkboy999.
The branding iron came from Rockler. It's pretty neat, I brand all my work just for the thrill of burning my name in it. I received it as a gift, but I think it was about $80 (US).
