Tool making, who want's to build furniture when there's cool tools to be made. Looking forward to this plane build.

I will see.

The brass us 3.5mm thick and the steel 5mm.

Some progress from today. Still need some more tidying.

Your thread has reminded me of Stavros Gakos’s Dovetailed Scrub Plane that he made. I will try and link an Instagram post here Login • Instagram
It seems to work,but opens up Instagram on another page.
I am thinking about making one like this, once I am finished my challenge plane.
In hindsight, I should have started with a build like this.

Great link. I have watched a few of his videos. He is very clever. And I like the profile of yours.

Some progress.

I cut out the sole and sanded it down. As it was just some hot rolled mild steel I had to flatten it a bit. I went as far as I thought is good enough as I expect some distortion again from bashing the metals together.




It sits mainly quite tight. Some further refinement still needed.

But I have one 0.4mm gap, where I hope I have enough metal to peen into and close the gap. Any thoughts on that?

As Matt would say, just get a big hammer! Sorry CK, probably better to get some advice from someone who knows what they are doing. Dovetails are looking good on the whole

Wow, Cklett your flying again,
I’ve only done two dovetail construction planes, but I would say as long as you have enough steel , that one dovetail that has a gap should close up and disappear altogether,
Once you start peening them together(I prefer bashing ,but the snobs around hear might get upset at us.).

This is because the steel holds the "dovetail" shape and the brass moulds itself into it?

Not much progress. Work put a grinding halt on my shed time.

From Matt's post in other thread however I thought I can improve on my tools a bit by grinding off the face of an older square file as a safe edge.

Then I needed a handle for that file and by rummaging in my scrap pile found a handle from a rolling pin my wife broke. And no, she did not break it over my head. Although if she would have be sure I'd deserved it ;-)

So I quickly turned that into a handle with a piece of copper pipe as ferule. A bit of work with a rasp to fit the ferule, some BLO and wax and finnished the handle. It'll do for now.

Practise, practise, practise....

Second side fitted to the sole. I think this time I got a better fit than on the first one.




Next is doing the mouth and then preparing for peening.

I thought to give a bit more stats as well.
The blade is about 44mm wide and the body with 300mm somewhere between a #4 and #5. It puts it to similar length as Lee Valley scrub plane, but wider.
