Kerfing Plane
With no space, or budget, for machines, all my sawdust production is with hand tools. Progressing from making things using DAR timber to having to resaw stock, a kerfing plane seems like a good idea to help me saw straight, so I decided to have a go at making one. Everything was done with hand tools, except drilling the holes for the fence rods & saw bolts, a drill press is the only machine I have.
First step was to come up with a design for the body & make a template. The handle on a Disston back saw provided the shape for the handle.

The plane is made from an old piece of 25mm Jarah that I've had sitting around for over 20 years. The body was then drilled, shaped with rasps, sanded & the slot for the blade cut.

The fence rods are 1/2" thin wall brass tube from the hobby shop, with hardwood dowel Araldited inside. Jarah buttons were shaped in the drill press for the ends & a brass drawer pull from Bunnings made a good fence clamping knob. A cheap hardpoint saw provided the blade, but on a test run, clogged up a bit, so I might have to make a new one with deep gullets, like the one Blackburn tools sell. (Anyone bringing a toothing machine to FFs get together next month)
The Jacaranda insert in the fence is to cover a couple of "Oopses" The two parts of the fence moved during glueing, putting the fence out of parallel with the blade & I also felt the fence needed to be a bit lower than I first made it.
I think I'll now need to get a coarser rip saw, or make a frame saw & get some practice in before I attack the CL stump blocks I got from Mapleman.

I like your design and nice work. Could you make the same thing with Tas oak or Vic ash or do you need the hardness of Jarrah?

Here's a couple of photos with a ruler to give an idea of sizes & the position of the fence support rods.

I find that when I'm using it I prefer to place my left hand on the fence, as shown below, rather than holding the front of the plane body. Anyone making one should consider this when making the fence & positioning the support rods. If anyone has any other questions, feel free to ask.
