    Default Leather strop - which side?

    I am attaching a piece of leather to a drum for polishing and was wondering if I should have smooth side up or down. I have vague recollections of a razor strop being the smooth side.
    Also is there any alternative material I can use?
    The game plan is to attach it to the face of a drum and dimension will be 60mm wide by ~471mm long plus a bit more for a spliced join. I hope my maths is correct and the circumference of a circle is 150*22/7 for a 150mm diameter circle.
    Thanks,
    Cheers,
    Rod

    The smooth side should be UP.
    The purpose of a strop is not to sharpen, but to straighten up the edge of the tool and possibly even to break off any burrs that are attached to the item being stropped. It can also be used to polish if used with a suitable compound.

    When I first got my Tormek, the leather banding on the wheel was rough albeit the leather is quite soft. I applied some liquid parrafin which you can get from your local chemist to dress the wheel initially and for compound I use a product called Autosol which is available from most car accessory places. Its a chrome cleaner but is actually better than the stuff Tormek supply and Much cheaper.Works a treat.

    But I bet your skin is a smooooth as a babys bum.

    I dont condone belting kids, I think only week ppl hit kids, a small tap is ok, but where do you draw the line.
    I had a mate when I was from 8 to 18 years old, his old man belted the whole family every time he came home from the pub, drunk or otherwise.

    Now my mate beats up his family too.
    He must consider it to be normal behavour.

    Aw c'mon Al how you going to get the little ba$tards to behave if you don't bash 'em up now and again? I reckon start young enough on 'em,.. say 5 to 6 weeks old, and by the time they've growed up they know how to behave decent like.

    My stepfather used to whip us with extension cords. We got to keep the marks for weeks. Yes it hurt a bit, but at least we now know how to act like adults.

    Cir = D * Pi =
    150mm *3.1415926535897932384626433832795 = 471.23889803846898576939650749193mm
    gave or take a tad.

    Strops used to have two pieces of leather.
    Both smooth side out, one with some grinding paste embedded,
    the other just plain.

    I use the suede edge to take the wire off of my chisels when I sharpen em. The idea as I see it is to break the wire off after continuously moving it from one side of the chisel to the other. I hardly use pressure at all.

    If your making a strop with a block of wood, pad the leather with some other material - ie glue some felt to the wood first and wrap the leather around the side of the wood a little.

    I have some of that green compound which I put onto one side of the strop - rather handy so make it double sided. You can then use a dry strop or one charged with the compound. Good thing about the suede is that the compound gets rubbed right in after a while and you can charge it less and less over time. Just make sure you can hang it up, and pull the wire out of it too.

    Disciplining children with violence is a sign of low mental capacity. If you cant hold your temper with a child or woman then you need to be put on your knees and shot in the back of the head. Or at least belted with heavy tool grade steel. Neanderthals are supposed to be extinct, but I guess genetics got mixed up somewhere along the lines.

    22/7 is approximate to pi not equivalent.

    22/7 = 3.1428571428571428571428571428571
    pi = 3.1415926535897932384626433832795

    Thanks for the responses. Looks like I wasn't too far off the mark with the length.

    I will use smooth side out and some Autosol.

    That depends on your definition of equivalent and where you apply it. Uni lecturers will use 22/7 because its an easier number to deal with than 3.14152019827498172947812834781724981209381029380192839817248713481724981720849719238749237587246887349812370491809810238791387593847914 etc etc
