mother of all crosscut sleds
I'm helping out some friends in making a bespoke bookshelf. I'm cutting the kit of parts …… and they will sand , finish and assemble.
The design has 40 half lapped joints and 8 rebated joints which required 88 (!!!) rebates! I needed divine inspiration so, last Sunday, I went to St Bunnings and noticed a pallet of black film covered ply ON SPECIAL! Thank you St Bunning………..
My shed is too small to store a sled of the necessary size so I made it as follows and it can be disassembled and stacked away afterwards.
The black film is sufficiently 'slippery' to use the ply as a base directly on the table saw ……..

so I lay the 600 x 2400 piece on the table top, fitted mitre slides and made a 2400 long fence from 2 pieces of 200 x 2400 x 19 pine and some simple bracing
sled03.jpg
a pair of pigeon holes permitted clamping the 70 x 30 frame timber
sled02.jpg
whereas the pine fence was high enough to clamp the 280 x 30 magnolia shelves (isn't it hard to say magn-0-lia without putting on a Southern American accent!)
sled04.jpg
the geometry is complicated but, after a few hours of concentration, the 6 shelves are finished

and ready for sanding ….. but NOT by me !

Necessity is the mother of invention, sleds aren't new but your interpretation is and very well done too
The person who never made a mistake never made anything

Thanks Fletty for ALL your effort in taking over this project and finishing it, sorry for having to leave you and Wayne at such short notice to assemble and install.
Magnolia boards were from Greg Ward colour is brilliant Fletty dressed these to size.
Wayne the owner sanded and finished with Water based WoP. No the photo here of Wayne on his hands and knee's was just sanded the rough off so we could check colour of the Magnolia he was using his old and I mean very old Millers Falls belt sander.
We then obtained again from Greg Ward some very nice grained Blackbean for the frame to contrast stunning stuff.
Photos of the man himself assembling it for my neighbour, I didn't get finished shots as I/we had to race off to baby sit 2 grandsons.
Made to order with much of the design done by Fletty.

Greg your spot on there its one of a kind and with out Flett's know how and expertise this would have ended up a dogs breakfast ...........not by me.
If anyone ever comes across or wants to work Magnolia I'd highly recommend it even tho i only worked a small part of this I have some 6"x6"x1 1/4" blank off cuts to turn so will get more of a chance yet.
Greg if you or Mal find anymore of it let me know please.
