Default Moxon Vise from McJing kit

This is my Moxon vise from the McJing kit.

    IMG_0457.jpg

I have added a grub screw to the wheel that locks the screw to the wheel. There is one nut in the back of the vise for each screw mortised into the back.

The vise is held to the bench using 3/8" carriage bolts epoxied into the wooden hand grips you can see under the bench top apron, through the dog holes on the bench to mortised 3/8" nuts in the rear vise face. I have not fully tested how strong this is; but from trying to push on it with my hands, if you are sawing dovetails hard enough to move the vise, you're doing it wrong!

Made some knobs for the wheels from some Hairy Oak scraps.

The McJing wheels have an M8 thread. I used a 35mm M8 cap screw and used some thread lock in the wheel. Works really well!

Is this one of the TR20 kits Mark or M16/18? Have you put it to any use over the weekend? I notice the kits are ticketed as a 'top seller' on McJings site now, not surprising after all the comment they've generated on the forum.

I'm not surprised either. The quality for the price is outstanding value.

This is one of the TR20 kits with the 125mm ACME threaded rods.

Last weekend was spent milling gigantic Cherry boards that I still have to resaw. The amount of chips I generated was phenomenal! These are going to be my new mid-century style console. The reason I made those long clamps a while back.

I have also resawn some smaller boards for boxes that I will be using my new Moxon vise to hand dovetail with.

Thank you for providing such a great quality product at an affordable price. I've never been disappointed with things I've bought from you guys over the years but this is outstanding.

I just realised what the knobs reminded me of and what, no doubt, subconsciously inspired the shape as I turned it. The old-timey Alvey fishing reels with the wooden spools.

What a difference the addition of these springs would make to the vise!
Stored the idea in the memory box!!

I suppose if I was using this as my regular bench vise it might be something I would consider. But otherwise I really haven't felt the need.

I know this is an old post, but where did you get the grub screws from?

I've just picked up the mcjings moxon kit and prefer your version rather than the plans from the store

    Regards,

    Adam

You can buy grub screws from any decent nut and bolt place, I'm pretty sure even Bunnings stock a couple of smaller sizes. Of course you will need the appropriate size hand tap to go with them.

Yours is a better arrangement. I've seen ones with bloody big bolts sticking way out front and can only think, they will get in the way a lot. Or I'll walk past and dig one into my hip. And appears they can't be screwed in as needed because they have a locking nut on the back.
