Just a quick inquiry, too see what others are doing or for there plane blades in the 2020 carry on making, laughing plane competition.

We are getting up there in numbers now,
The Judges seem, to be sitting back and just make observations(That personally worries me considering one of the Judges occupation.).
So in the spirt of sharing and caring,

I’m wanting to use some 01 Tool steel,
And know of these two Australian suppliers,do people know of other suppliers.

    01 Carbon Tool Steel, 4 x 50 x 500 mm - Creative Man

    O1 Tool Steel (3.2 x 38 x 900 mm) - Artisan Supplies

    Cheers Matt.

Matt, got a few more links that might be helpful.

    RS-Components - Tool Steel Rectangular Bar, 500mm x 10mm x 3mm

For the melbourne based people this looks promising but not sure what is stocked
    http://www.interlloy.com.au/our-products/tool-steel/

QLD based - Speciality Metals - Castle International

I know i said that i was planning on using O1 but looking at what's available 10mm thick I might need to get 1084 or another high carbon steel.

have you tried searching for gauge plate. That is O1 in an annealed state. several commercial suppliers advertise it although you will have to buy half or one metre lengths.

Those are the two suppliers I normally use, Matt. A couple of years ago I got some o1 from Hales Hales | Moulding Supplies | Tooling Components | Lubricants | Hales but there is none on their website any more.

There are a few ebay sellers mainly in the US, which can be handy if you need imperial measurements, eg if you want to make a blade for some of the Stanley planes you need 2" as 25mm is just a bit under. Artisan Supplies occasionally has imperial stock.

Also, Artisan Supplies ship to their Melbourne shopfront in Preston once a week and you can get stuff delivered for pickup there and pay no freight.

It looks like Creative man just getS his O1 from Bohler-Uddeholm so what about going direct to Bohler-Uddeholm - you might need to buy a longer length and split it up between you?

voestalpine High Performance Metals (Australia) Pty Ltd, which has owned Bohler-Uddeholm since 2007, still sells steel under the brand names Bohler and Udderholm. I chased them for steel for about 12 months and then gave up. They rarely have the small sizes we want in stock and are really not interested in small orders.

We currently have 12 starters. That would be 2 or 3 one-metre lengths of steel at best. We are spread out not just in Australia but overseas too. By the time you coordinate, buy, cut up and distribute I can see no real advantage in doing that. Might as well just let Artisan Supplies and Creative Man do it for us. I know a lot of knife-makers and they all buy from these two sources, even for large orders.

It would be reinventing the wheel and I don't think we would get a better wheel than the one we already have.

If someone wants to put the effort in to prove me wrong, go for it.

Maybe this is only available in WA but I visit the local (Welshpool) BU branch about once a month to look through their offcuts, mainly rod and bar - they have a wall of shelves about 5 shelves tall and 10 m long loaded with offcuts. Minimum buy if you require a receipt is $50 but its really easy to rack up $50 worth of stuff when purchasing 25+ mm rod etc. I'll need to watch out for tool steels next time I'm out there.

A member of the Metalworkers Forum used to work at there and I found him really helpful - I don't know if he is still there. I've bought 1m lengths of Phosphor bronze, and various short lengths of rod I could not find on the offcuts shelf. I bought just 300mm of 60mm diameter 4140 from them for a special set of rollers I made, absolutely no problems with the small orders.

I guess that doesn't help much because they're not exactly on-line.

If that exists in Melbourne it is a well-kept secret. I wish it did.

    Bohdan,

    Anymore information on this company?.

    Do they have a website?
Do they have public counter for sales,
Or are they more driven towards trade sales.
Very curious as they are my side of town, ie a twenty min drive away.

    Cheers Matt.

Ive bought steel from their Launceston Branch a couple of times. They are happy to do cash sales although they didnt have any gauge plate in the sizes I was looking for some six months ago.

I knew the company was located there.

What I was saying was that as far as I know they did not have a big shelf of offcuts for sale.

Can anyone confirm this one way or the other?
