I would have to imagine that some cauls made of steel section clamped over top and bottom in addition to the sash cramps would have to have a similar effect although would be slightly more time consuming but a hell of a lot cheaper. Ther are critics who say you don't get the squeeze in mid panel but don't forget you can get much of it near the ends where you can clamp the caul midway accross the span.

There is also the DIY panel clamp system sold by Carbatec & Timbecon - 2 sets of steel bitz and 2 2x2 DIY wood beams between them, you just need to buy enough for the length of panel - 1 clamp per 18" (45cm) is recommended - you could use steel cauls if you wanted to.

From my browsing the big specialist panel clamping jigs/machines are MUCH more expensive, unless you are running a furniture factory, and the kit clamps are 1) scaleable ( you only use as many as needed) & 2) more compact when put away.

Yes, the old woodworkers of yesteryear used to make them, saw a plan on how to make them in a library book recently.

But sash clamps with some four by two's clamped across the boards with G-clamps at a number of places will also do the trick.

This crowd make components for a panel clamp.

I have no idea if it is any good, but the pictures on the site might give you some ideas about making your own with pipe clamps.

Do a search as there have been discussions in the past. Also some good sites where they have been tested. sites quoted in previous threads.

Overall I find it quite good. Some loose tenon stock which is slightly looser makes it easier to get a perfect alignment. Drying slightly large stock in a microwave may help.

Here's some pictures of a glue press I made several years ago. Based on the Plano Press. 2x3 stock bored 3" on center. 3/8" holes for 5/16" bolts and tee nuts.Shellac and wax finish.I hang the press off lumber rack using hanging strips ( also referred to as french cleats.) This makes the press easily removable when not used.I start 5/16"x 10" bolts into tee nuts thru front piece into back one at a comfortable height. Apply glue and set next board on top etc until I have needed width of glueup.Then install bolt into hole above last board and tighten with a cordless drill that has a clutch. Install clamps and snug up bolts.
This press gives you an even plane across all the joints.Biscuits or dowels are not needed for alignment.

I built a gluepress similar to mike44's and it works well.
But I am just as comfortable using sashclamps.
I have a bin of small wedges that I tap between the sash bars and high spots to straighten the panels while the glue is setting.
