    Default Pulleys

I am thinking of making a slow speed grinder using a spindle that I have powered by an old washing machine motor that my father preserved.

I estimate that the motor will turn at about 1500 rpm so I want about a 300mm pulley to put on the spindle to reduce the rpm of the grindstones to about 300.

Where do you think I should look to buy reasonably priced Vee-pulleys? Sydney preferred. I am also looking for bearing blocks etc.
    Cheers

250mm pully down to a 50mm pully will give you 300rpm. An " A section" allum pulley of 50mm diam will cost about $10.00. The 250mm will probably coast well over $50.00, although I haven't bought one that size before. I have seen plenty of pullies of around that size on washing machines, at the tip.

Any decent transmission and bearing outlet will have what you need. Pillow block bearing sets come up on ebay regularly, or you could get them from the same shop as pullies. They will set you back about $45.00 for the set of 2, of a size that would suit your application. There are 3 transmission shops in Penrith that I get some gear from. If you are close to Penrith, Metropoliton Bearing Supplies is your best bet.

I've just bought myself a slow speed grinder:

    At 10:1, 5 turns a second makes 300rpm

Thanks for the thoughts. Fossil (and the suggestion, Richard - all I need to do is to train the no.1 son to turn the grindstone....)

Has anyone had any dealings with the people at Lager (great name, eh) - their website suggests that they have all the kit that I might need....

Otherwise, I suppose it is off to the scrap merchants to fossick through the cast iron and aluminium bins...
    Cheers

Any bearing company will supply the grinding head assembly you need.

Perhaps cbc bearings for bearing blocks.

Thanks for the offer. I don't think I need the bearings for this project as my spindle is already mounted with bearings. All I need are the pulleys, but I will keep thinking and see whether I can come up with a project that needs pillow blocks for this decade...
