    Default Rams Head Scraper

Used a piece of walnut that was headed to the woodstove, cut the cards out of an old saw, makes a fine ribbon. Have three more to make for finals on dished chair bottoms.

    Beautiful work Walnutty.

How do plan to grind the curved edge of the bowl scraper for your chair bottoms (assuming they are curved)?

nothing is so easy to do as when you figure out the impossible.

    Thanks Knurl,

Welp, I think we are talking about the same thing, but different terms. Yes, these chair bottoms will be curved. I make the initial cuts to the card scraper stock with a hack saw, and then shape to final radius with a wet wheel. Sometimes I use a die grinder, but I don't like the heat to the card stock edge, and, it can be difficult to control. I use a diamond scribe to etch my shape line and then get to it on the wheel with as little heat as possible.

The radius of each sole (aft the mouth) is less by 7-10 thou. but stays on the same cylinder plane as the fore. I found it best to give a bit of aft sole relief, delivers a good curl that I can control better with the flex screw. The tighter the radius, the slightly greater incline angle I cut to the body of the scraper, its mutual card holder and the flex screw angle.

I do my very best to make any of my hand tools out of the junk scraps I find in the woodstove box. I have a good number of different radius scrapers, so don't need to make as many anymore, I try to design being able to use past ones, but sometimes it doesn't work out. I don't mind, I like to make them.

Sorry, didn't really intend to be that long winded.

    Cheers,

    Walnutty,

Way cool - I was kinda forced to use a scraper to make my boot today and realized how useful these things are so I now wanna make some decent handles for a couple of blades I have laying around, One is a 6" and the other is about a 4 or 5".

Would you mind posting a picture of you holding your scraper. I can't quite tell how you would hold it. It the planets align and the grey kangaroo is visible in the top paddock by tuesday I might have time to make myself one, otherwise it's back to the salt mines for the next month.

    Cheers

    Greetings BobL,

All the rest of my gang are still in the sack over here in yankee land, so I don't have anyone that can push a camera button to show you the holding. Easy though, in the last photo I posted (above), that's the way (single/flex screw side), the scrapers face you when you work them, pushing them over the surface.

You mentioned the length of your cards you plan to use, well, if you're going to make some ram head holders, you will need to cut your cards down so they are in the 3" range. For your 6" card, you'll get to make two great holders, and have four hooked/burred edges at the ready. I still have card scrapers I used without holders, need the length to get the necessary flex by hand.

Hope this helps. As the crew gets a fire lit, we might risk having a camera shatter with a picture of me pushing one over some work. Sorry, don't know about kangaroos and paddocks, but do know about salt mines!

    Cheers,

Thanks WN, its more how the hand grasps the horns and where the fingers go that I'm interested in.

    Cheers
