    Default Storing files

    'Morning,
I do a lot of filing in my shed, quite enjoy it really , and one thing you learn quickly is that files need to be looked after. No bashing them together in a tray or drawer, it ruins the teeth. I used to have them stored in tool rolls, but recently made a purpose-built "filing cabinet", which I thought I'd share with you.
It has two swingout panels or doors, for double-sided hanging.
    1. New and more commonly used files are on the front, including diamond hones, & thread files placed horizontally, as well as a cleaning card.
    2. Older ones are inside, and right at the back are punches and cold chisels.

    Cheers,
    Andy Mac

    Hi Andy,
Great storage solution . I didn't think it could happen but I have file envy. I currently have three files in total and generally they bash around in a toolbox. Needless to say they are not very effective.
I might have to look at a better storage solution as I increase our collection.
    Cheers
    Tom

Like Tom I also have file envy. I have a few files but most of them are blunt probably because they are just stored in the tool box and also not having the right file for the application.

For what they are I consider good files are expensive and seem to be overpriced when you compare them to more complicated types of tools. Maybe it's the manufacturing process that makes them expensive.

Well all that work I have to envy but my files hang on a piece of aluminum angle with slots cut in it. Works fine for me.

    File envy? Not here...

Mine live in a box I whipped up, just a bunch of shelves with wooden dividers to keep them apart stapled to the shelves.

Not as pretty as your though Andy.

Oh yeah, filing is not 'fun'. Not when you find you have new and interesting callouses from filing.

Hint, gun shows are great places to pick up good files for cheap. That's why I have dozens of the things.

Either that, or live here. A big 14" half round is just under $20. Good files, and dirt cheap. Rasps are the same, which is why I have a heap of them too.

    Oh yeah, Barry.

You could make a file. Just take a lump of O1, a chisel, a hammer and find some heat...

I agree, retail prices are crazy for files, which is why you have to find out where they are cheap. I ahve yet to pay more than $20 (save the $25 Magicut) for any of my files. Usually under $10 for 12" long, any cut.

Which reminds me, I should replace some of my worn out ones. I hope dad hasn't purloined the ones I left there...
