Timber Threads
Im sure this topic had had plenty of discussion but I have not been able to find what I'm after.
For making timber threads internal and external how much difference does thrrad type make?
These are sample threads I found on the net
Is a square thread premium for strength?
The area of most interest to me is for clamps and vises.
Edit: Also appreciate any input on good timbers to use

Most clamps and vises in metal use Acme for strength and long pitch (hence rapid action). I expect the same would apply in timber.
According to Machinery's Handbook, so-called translational (vs. fastening) threads are usually square, Acme and buttress. Square is most efficient, but also most difficult to produce because of parallel sides; also can't be adjusted for wear. Buttress is usually for one-directional loading.
Most threads in wood, however, use sharp V, because taps are available, as well as thread chasing tools (e.g. Sorby); also 60-degree cutters are available for large diameters in threading machines. For Acme or buttress, you'd need special cutters, or simply carve by hand.
