    Default Sturdee's marking gauges.

Recently I posted some pics of the restored panel marking gauge I bought at a garage sale. Whilst it works great on timber panels it does not work very well with sheet goods. So based on it I made a pencil panel-marking gauge for use with sheet goods as well as a pencil marking gauge.

Timbers used are ofcuts recycled from a furniture manufacturer (after hours skip diving ) with a finish of hard shellac followed with a wax finish.

Photo 1 shows the panel gauge.

Photo 2 shows a close up of the pencil holding system.

Photo 3 shows the other details.

Photo 4 shows the pencil marking gauge.

Photo 5 shows the various components.

Peter, what clothing apparell do you wear for skip diving?

    Tool looks good.

Have you made a mortise gauge yet with brass wind up for moving pin?

Yes they are nice, but more importantly easy to make and use. They are standard knockdown fittings, available from Bunnings and Timbecon, and a bit of timber rounded on the sander.

Details of how to make them is in a previous post.

John, I wear to same kind of togs as you do when you go skip diving. I have a mortise gauge, picked it up at Trash and Treasure for $ 2. Don't know why as I've got a chisel morticer.

    Snip out...

    Peter.
Mind if I ask which trash and treasure market? And does it have much in the way of old woodworking tools?

I only ask as I suspect (strongly!) that I used to live around the corner from you Mr. Sturdee. And I do mean around the corner.

If it's the one I am thinking of, I'll ask someone to go hunting for me. I can't do it myself obviously, and this year Christmas and new year are both on Sundays, which means that if I do go home, I can't go hunting myself, even if the tools are thicker than flies.

It's called the Trash and Treasure Market on Boronia Road Wantirna. Open every Sunday. There are the regular traders as well as casuals.

The best bargains are from the casual sellers. eg a specialised tack hammer 50 cents, a stanley 4 1/2 in need of tender restoration $ 5 , squares $ 5.

    There are a number of regular traders specialising in hand tools, prices are dearer with them. eg planes from $ 30 for a # 4, $ 35 for a #5, $ 40 for a #6 and $ 50 for a #7. Wooden moulding planes $ 10 - $ 15 Chisels around $10.

BTW call me Peter and send me a pm to see if you're right about having lived around the corner.
