    Default New saw style--for me that is

    Hey Everyone,

    Seeing how it seems I don't do real woodworking much anymore, I'll keep boring y'all with these things...

    Here's a panel saw, 22" length, 9 ppi. The design is taken from a Harvey Peace panel saw. Handle is Cocobolo.

    Ah, Groggy. How I wish I could!

    Nearly 32 years ago when my wife and I were married, we fantasized about moving to Australia. Out in the middle of nowhere. Even got as far as checking immigration requirements.

    Instead, we moved up into the mountains--in the middle of nowhere and built a log cabin, had a couple children and, well, the rest is history.

    Maybe one day we can visit and bring some presents...That would be fun!

    Those are simply Stunning!

    However I don't really believe that they cut worth a damn. All show and no go. I suggest that you send a few my way for testing and review on our Aussie timber (ya' know, Real Man's Stuff - none of that woosie USA fluff that you have on the other side of the Pond).

    You're correct, they don't cut worth a dang. So I might as well not even bother sending any down under <g>...

    I will hopefully have the instructions for the kits illustrated soon. Other than the metal work, it will show all the woodwork portion. We shear out the steel, something which may put it out of range for a non-saw maker.

    However, Leif Hanson has on his site a great tutorial on making saws, from cutting out the steel to shaping the handle. He has also added a section on making split nuts and bolts. Very good site.

    Ah, ya never know!

    Actually, Chris Schwarz, the editor for Popular Woodworking magazine had a customer's 4 saws so long the customer wrote me and told me that 1] he was worried he may never see 'em again, and 2] he had never paid so much or waited so long for new used saws...I thought that was pretty funny.

    I'm about to start to renovate a couple of old panel saws so now I know what they should look like! (yeah, right! ).

    I'll be happy if I can sharpen them so they cut straight.

    One day be great to see you over here. Just go to the East coast ok. Nice blokes out on the west coast. But there better over this side

    Stupid question: whats that single tooth, jagged part up on the nose of the saw all about ?

    Hi Jake--no problem! If we can make it there at all, we can afford the time to be there a bit to soak it in, top to bottom, right to left.

    The thing on top is called a nib. It's actually rounded but the pic makes it look sharp. Straight-back saws often have this missing, but one an otherwise straight saw, if there is that drop at the toe for a couple inches, it had a nib. They often break off. Henry Disston wrote they serve no purpose but to break the sight line of an otherwise straight line.
