Homemade hammer,

After purchasing some berg chisels from mattocks as they are so nice I thought it would be sacrilege to hit them with a metal hammer.

into the wood pile and found a red gum post and some black but decking, 150mm x 90mm x 75mm wide with about a 2 degree taper for the red gum head and about 350mm x 32 x 32 for the handle. Cut a 3 degree taper onto the handle and that left the hold onto end about 31 x 23, seems to fit in my hand ok so mark up and set up the drill press. 28mm spade bit roughly 1/3 down from the top then an 18mm spade bit through to the bottom.
A couple of hours later tapping very gently as I don’t want to A hurt my chisels and B stuff it up and have to start again.

pictures show handle taper, start of chisel work and using a light behind to help with high spots and of course the finished product

Looks good. I like the Red Gum contrast with the Blackbutt. I imagine it will give a fair wallop. Will there be enough grip between head and handle without a timber wedge?

I think the design of these or what I found on the web was the centrifugal force is always sending the head up/out/tighter. It is a very snug fit, I forced the handle home with a hammer and stopped when I stupidly realised I could keep whacking until I split the red gum, so very snug.

I guess use will find out if it snug enough, I think a tap or two on the handle at the top to re-wedge it will probably suffice and I don’t think it will ever need an actual wedge cut into it.
but I do look forward to using it on my new very old chisels.

The perfect use for a lump of hard hardwood.

I've made a couple like this and they work well. The handle is the wedge!

I made one out of ironbark for a seriously heavy malet but perhaps aimed a bit high weight wise. Only really needed it a couple of times. Since then made a couple lighter ones. Good to have a few weights for different jobs.
The tapered handle ones are definitely the best as the head can never fly off.

Yes I'm pleased you decided not to take to those chisels with a steel hammer.

DJ beat me to it (thank you) the chisels are soooo nice compared to an Irwin or yellow handle Stanley from Bunnings.
