Default The Ugly Slug Infill Plane #2

Finished this little number up today, almost,
    full of warts and all.

So ,not really a look at me ,look at me ,but hopefully this inspires a few to have a go or to enter the 2020 2021 plane making competition.

Blade is 6 mm 01 Tool steel on a 45 degree Bed (Because I’m common lol)
    Bevel Down.
Sole length is 170 mm by 45 mm wide.
Sole was 6 mm mild steel.
    Sides are 3 mm Brass
Infill Gidgee , with high gloss spray.

I’ve learnt heaps more on this one then I did on my mitre plane.

Do leave at least 1.5 mm to peen your dovetails with, I didn’t on the sole ones
Do leave enough rivet material to peen over,
    I didn’t.
Do make sure your sides are in tight before assembly, and the stuffings don’t move ,I didn’t.

Measure 12 times ,then drill your Lever cap holes, I only measured 3 times then had to fill one hole and start again.

Make sure you know were your, chatter block is before drilling your rivet hole, I didn’t.
    An spat the dummy,
Hence, it’s new tiled of Ugly Slug

Unfortunately ,being in lockdown town( Melbourne).
I’m limited to how far I can finish this, I also have issues trying to turn a lever cap adjustment wheel using a drill press, when I have a metal lathe at home.
Also waiting on some Brass hardware for the Lever Cap axle pivots.

But ,after all that fan fair, considering the blade is soft, and sharpened ( more like round over) on a piece of MDF with some 320 wet and dry throw on it.
    I got this .

    I’m well happppppyyyyyy

    Thank You Ian W.

    Cheers Matt.

That isn't ugly. It's not a HNT Gordon, but I think its kind of pretty. I'm sure you've learnt plenty. The next one will be even nicer.

    Well done

    Thanks Lyndon,
The learning curve was up and down,
    But if your not learning......

That looks pretty good Matt. Hasn’t got quite the same pedigree as a Holtey or “The Body” but it’s a working plane, and when you get the chance to put the correct hardware on it, it will look even better.

    Matt

Under the circumstances of lockdown and minimal tools, certainly not the usual tools with which you are most familiar, that is a most creditable effort. I am tempted to just throw in the towel when you get back to the full workshop.

No, only joking. It is all in the participation.

Those dovetailed planes are so very nice!

Well; while I won't be diverting my adoring gaze from Scarlett Johansson anytime soon it's not hideous enough to make me want to stab myself in the eyeballs. So all in all a win!

How are you going to finish the end of the lever cap; rounded to match the adjuster wheel or curved to match the blade?

Nice job Matt. The dovetails look a little conventional though . And people are already starting to compare you to other planemakers - definitely moving up in the world!! I have just finished reading the GH book, it has inspired me to fettle and I did make a new handle and tote out of fiddleback redgum for my #4. I will have to get cracking on my chamfer plane though

Um good question, with regards the Lever cap Chief,
I think all get the bolt sorted out first, then see were we go.

I suspect that by the time this little plane is finished off properly it wont look too bad. Kinda like Cinderella, so lets wait and see her in her ball gown before getting too judgmental.
These little infill smoothers interest me and I'm curious how well they work smoothing cranky grain without a chip breaker. I hope you get the time to finish it properly and then give a report on how well it works.

Sure enough, but everyone has to start at the lower end, and you are progressing at a steady rate. Won’t be long until you are turning/hammering out planes that will be the envy of us all.

I want to see this ugly duckling but I don't see any photos. I'm at the beginning of my plane building journey and building with the plain Jane materials I have so I fully expect them to be well, plain planes.
