Default 3mm Morice chisel, steel issue

    Guys

I have just finished making a mortice chisel out of a bit of old steel I had lying around. I needed a thin one and none (old) up on EPay and none available at what I consider a reasonable RRP.

Turned out quite well, if anyones interested I'll post a piccies when I turn up a handle, but one problem................

When I began sharpening (to 6000 Jap waterstone) I had the old problem of the flip flappy wire. I did get rid of it stropping on a leather strop, but I overcame that problem, in technique, months ago. So I'm thinking, whilst I tempered the point (cherry red then quench) the steel must be fairly ordinary. I was just a piece of 3mm ribbon from Bunnies left over from another ripper wheeze.

Low carbon = soft regardless of treatment? Yes?

    Comments please

    Comparatively speaking, yep.

Good source of quality steel at a decent price (in small sizes):
Find the guys who sell assorted tools at the various markets - like Paddys etc. Most of them sell metal lathe tool blanks for a dollar or two each. Very nice quality steel for marking knives, small blades, even a small mortise chisel I would think.

    Thumbs up

Good effort Bodgy making your own.

Show us the joint when you use it, photograph it with something else so we can get an impression of the size.

    Hi Bodgy

I would love to see it. Post a pic.

What angle did you grind the bevel? For a mortice chisel I would recommend 30 - 35 degrees.

I finished a blade for a router plane yesterday, made from a hex key. That was seriously hard steel!

    Regards from Perth

Derek, I put the pictures in another thread:

I also made a 5mm mortice file from an old triangular chisel. Never again, took hours to gring down and I snapped it once whilst holding in the vise. Stays real sharp tho.

Nice to see a chisel with a French name finally making an appearance.

    Ah, Morice!
