Weird marking gauge
Been cleaning out the shed a bit, trying to clear my closest shelves of all but the tools I mostly use. And I came accross this monstrosity. And I thought, I know, I'll post on the net...
Its what you get when you've got a bit too much time on your hands, wear ear plugs constantly, and let your enthusisatic mind brainstorm out of control. I made it about 7 years ago. Totally forgot all about it
Its an attempt at combining a pen marking gauge with a normal cutting marking gauge into one tool. Works Ok, just too complicated for its own good. Put a lot of thought into it, but forgot to ask myself the most basic of questions at the time. Like -> Why do you need it ? why bother ? ....what can I say....I'm a nutter who likes to experiment.
At the very least its an example of what can be done with simple metal working tools. All I used was the edge and side of a regular grinding wheel. A hacksaw, portable drill, a few taps. Its made of mild steel, with a taped on brass plate ; The main shaft was ripped out of some old printing machine.
The cutter is ground from the shank of a needle file ; ground chisel like and buffed sharp. You turn it in its hole so that the blade angles outward slightly such that it draws the fence into your work rather than away, like the way japanese marking gauges work. This cutter is fixed in place on the main shaft and off this is another holder of sorts that holds a biro. While the biro is fixed, its holder swivels, such that you can mark a biro line parallel on either side to your knife cut line ; or right on top if you want.
The idea, which seems stupid now, was that you could set your cutter to your final dimension. Set the biro outside of that. Ruff mark out with the biro, so that you have an easily seen line for ruff cutting out. After ruff cutting out you could work your way right onto the cutters line to get that final accuracy we all seem to want.
Anyway might give someone an idea...or maybe not

That's ugly, but interesting.
Sorry, but it really is ugly. I can't think of another way to put it delicately...
I do like how the marking parts are held however. I think that definitely has possibilities.
So, what are you going to do with it now?

You probably get this a lot. But why are you over in Japan anyway? Excuse if I'm wrong just got the impression your not from there..... just quietly (shhh) is it for the MONEY !!! Could be a few reasons. Just taking a big guess.
Anyway, I'm off to work. Seeya.
