What do you use as Winding Sticks?
Since these are not only very easy to make, but also one of the most useful (essential!) tools for woodworking - yet cannot be bought (well, I think that LV do sell them in Canada), I was wondering what others use.
Here are mine. A long set (2') and a short set. Jarrah and Bluegum.

Since the only real requirement is that both must be straight, I generally use any two offcuts lying around that are of sufficient size. Actually, I don't use this technique very often since I'm usually only checking for twist before putting a board through the thicknesser and I find I can spot this by sighting across the opposite ends of the board.

I use two L-shaped aluminium sections. I picked this idea somewhere on this board, but I do not remember from whom.

WOW, they're flash.
I'm ashamed to admit it, but I use anything I can grab, depends how wide the board is I'm flattening.
Ali angle, off cuts, on cuts. Straight with parrallel sides makes you a candidate for a winding stick in my shed.Boring signature time again!

Nice sticks Derek.
I use a couple of bits of pine studding, with a piece of black electrical tape stuck to the top of the rear one to aid in sighting.
Must get round to making some nice ones one day. Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

Ay.... But here is where the dilemma sets in. If you wanted to check a board to see if it is warped so you can make some Winding Sticks, what would you use? Kinda like that chicken and egg thing all overe again. Man now I gonna stay up all night ( morning ) thinking about that.

Yeh John, I've never seen Derek so unsure of himself. He must have a cold or something.

A couple of pieces of 5/4 x 2" x 20" cherry with 1" wide blue masking tape across the top. The tape makes a big difference ,even the slightest wind can be picked up sighting the tape lines.

For safety reasons & machinery limitations.. I sometimes use an old fashioned hand plane for a few pieces of left over scrap that are either too wide for my little 6" power jointer or too short for 12" portable thickness planer.

Much like yours Derek, except that mine are in KD Tas Oak, and are 300mm and 100mm in length.
I did think about the LV ones, but much as I like their stuff, couldn't justify the price for what is a really very simple bit of kit. It's just like eclipse or circle drawing/marking jigs - a simple bow, some string and a Spanish Windlass type affair - and Bob's your Aunty
