Thanks, Ian. It seems like it's another case where I should dive in rather than sit back and think too much about it!

I'm thinking my tail vice screw will be ~2" diameter, so I'll aim for 3tpi. Is 2tpi too coarse for 2"? Perhaps I should do some experimenting!

Yup - that's my way. Sometimes I wish I had spent more time "thinking about it", but when I do that I more often than not become too worried about the potential pitfalls and never start....

The coarsest thread I've made so far is 3 tpi & it isn't in a vise so I can't give you any insights on that score I'm afraid. I'm sure there's a balance between quick opening & closing & ease of tightening securely. My intuition says it is probably around 3-4 tpi for a 2" screw, but my intuition has been way off at times, so I'd definitely recommend sorting that part out for yourself.

As I said, 4tpi has worked well for me other than the occasional wish it moved a bit quicker, but as they say, 'you can't have everything'. If you've never had a tail vise before, I can almost guarantee you'll be so pleased with it it will take 20 years for you to start thinking about 'improvements'. 'Least that's how it went with me, almost the minute I finished my tail vise I wished I'd spaced the dog holes at closer intervals instead of the same spacing as the bench holes. It only took 20 years or so for me to get around to pulling it apart apart & making dog holes at half the spacing of the dogs along the bench. That made a big difference to the amount of handle-cranking that has to be done!

    Cheers,
    IW

I used the German Dieter Schmid tap and die set for my bench. Tail vise and face vise . That’s 62 mm . Which is very close to 2.5 inch .
It’s two TPI . One turn of the screw advances the vise 1/2 an inch. That’s pretty good. Compared to the two other benches here with the steel Carbatec screws . One turn on them advances 5mm which isn’t great. The faster wood screw is one of the best things about wood screws on work benches. I’d be going 2.5” two TPI .

Ah, great advice! I'll keep this in mind when I setout my dog holes.

Posting this link to a thread I somehow missed from 2021, which has a lot of helpful details. It was mentioned by MA back on post #10.
Hopefully this is helpful to those searching the forum in future!
