Etsy. Anyone heard of this site before ?
hello all
Last night flicking through foxtel while the forum was apparenlty down (thought it might have just been me for a while ) I came across a show that was talking about this web site called ETSY http://www.etsy.com/index.php.
It is basically a place for anyone who makes art and craft type stuff by hand to sell that stuff.
From the quick look around I had, there is quite a few Aussies on there.Though I couldnt find many Aussie woodworkers. I did find a guy who makes spindles and some pen makers (bloody pen makers are everywhere )
I was just wondering if anyone here has given it a crack?
And if so did they have any sucess ?
From what I saw it would probably be a better place than ebay to sell hand made wooden gear, even though they probably dont get the traffic that ebay does. I only say that because I have never heard of it before....at least every person that does visit is more likely after something unique and hand crafted.
cheers

I haven't had anything to do with 'em myself, besides check occasionally when I'm looking for inspiration. There is a small but fairly constant amount of woodturned items being listed there.
From my understanding of the site one of its' better features is that you can chat with your potential customers and work by commission.

I agree Skew I think there is plenty of good stuff to inspire there.
Over the weekend while the forum was down...I had a chance to look around a bit more....but made the mistake of showing SWMBO . It did keep her quiet for a couple of hours though . With no sounds eminating from the home office except for "oooohhh look at that pretty handbag" etc. etc.
Anyway after reading more about fees and what not, I thought I would give it a crack. I thought ya never know there might be some wealthy type Americans out there willing to pay postage on some quality stuff hand made from beautiful Aussie timbers
Im going to start with a few pens, (should have them ready by Wed, hopefully) see how that goes, then put up some other small items when I get a shippment of timber Im expecting from Tassie. I dont expect stuff to fly out the door but hopefully it might keep things ticking over.
I would still like to hear if anyone else has tried this...and if so, how it went ?
for anyone who is interested this is my shop on etsy....nothing in it yet...but should be soon

I'll be interested to hear how it works out for ya!
You never know, you might even get some competition... how does "roughnut.etsy.com" sound for a store name?

today is a very good day
Well Im off....sold one pen today to a guy from New York . This is a lot quicker than I expected, from what I have read on the Etsy forums there seems to be a lot of unhappy sellers who have had to wait months for a first sale.
Now I just need to get my A in to G and make some other stuff to list.
Though the other thing that makes today good should help with that
This lot arrived today aswell . Today is a very good day
cheers

I might have to retract that statement I did cost the pen carefully....except I didnt allow for how strong the Aussie dollar is at the moment
After recieving the paypal confiramtion and Etsy bill....I rekon I have got the pricing pretty much spot on. Once all fees are deducted I will clear about $40 Ausssie, which is what I normally charge for one of these pens anyway .
One thing I was thinking I could do though, is leave the payments sitting in my paypal account (paypal charge for withdrawls under $150 anyway) and wait for the Aussie dollar to weaken...making a few extra spondoolis
cheers
