Default Who am I: Number II

    .

I was born into severe poverty
I was conscripted into the army in 1915.
I was awarded a military cross twice for 'undaunted courage'

I then fought in a civil war.
    I received more military decorations.

I became a Brigade Commander and then a Divisional Commander.

Immediately prior to the Second World War my Command was attacked by 80,000 troops, 180 tanks and 450 aircraft.
My apparent response to this attack was conventional. But I held back two armoured brigades, encircled the enemy and decimated them. I destroyed an entire enemy army.

    I became a General.

My country was attacked and demoralised.

    I was made Commander-in-Chief.
I launched a counter attack against the enemy.
By the end of the counter attack the enemy had lost 200,000 men and 90,000 prisoners.
    All equipment abandoned or destroyed.
I eliminated the enemy's largest and most battle-hardened army .

I received my country's highest honour, and in my case a number '1' was engraved on that medallion.

I then set upon the enemy in all seriousness.
From this point forward the enemy was in continual retreat until the end.

    I won World War II.

My name is mostly unknown. Except by those who know. Eisenhower payed me the highest compliment.

The war in Europe ended with victory and nobody could have did that better than ***** ******* - we owed him that credit. He is a modest person, and so we can't undervalue his position in our mind. When we can come back to our country, there must be another type of Order for braveness, an Order named after ***** ******, which is awarded to everybody who can learn the bravery, the far vision, and the decisiveness of this soldier.

    —Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Montgomery, Patton and Rommel paid me high compliments. They were never even in my league, tho they themselves, and the west think they were.

Many people, famous and knowledgeable, have said that I am a friendly, quiet and retiring person.

I have been compared to Alexander the Great, and like he, I am now dead.

Thank your lucky stars I was on your side !! WHO am I

I know the answer but I googled it. Very interesting. I guessed the nationality but have never heard of this man before.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

So funny .... I really tried to remove all references that could be googled.

Did you google Eisenhower's words ?

Not many people have heard of him. He himself was retiring, tho ruthless in accepting casualty figures and achieving objectives at any cost.

But there were plenty in his country that were willing to take credit. And we had no interest in glorifying any but our own. So propaganda after the war, of all types, ensured that the one who deserved the most ... received the least ... thats life.

    cool bananas ... Greg

Waaaaaa ... I KNEW I should have changed the wording around entirely ... but then it would have been my words, and who am I to paraphrase Eisenhower ?

Haaaa ... After yesterdays effort I believe you. Obviously you, like me, explore the 'lesser known' avenues of history.

With the info you gave he could only be from one country and I only know of one WW II general from that country, so I guess I could have just put that up, but decided to look him up thru Google/Wiki first.

You're right, I have a long standing interest in history and have read extensively on WW II.

Having recently read Leningrad (Salisbury) and Berlin (Beevor) it was pretty easy for me to work it out.

Likewise. I was going to study history at uni but changed my mind at the last minute to take science but have retained a reading interest. Currently am ploughing my way through a few Roman history Audio books.
