If you google "legs on the bus" this very same conversation is going on all over the world. And no one appears to have an answer either.

Wheelinaround..mate, the sun up there has fried your brain. You should've married my missus.
For the pedants I've edited my original post.

Only one of the PMs I received (Geoff) declared the correct answer and 4 others are correct on the forum.

I'm interested in seeing what percentage get the correct number.

PS there's no trick. I did it in my head in less than 15 seconds.....nyaa nyaa nyaaa!

I'm too tired to do it in mine

    7 girls
    7 backbacks
    7 big cats
    7 small cats

    each backpack has 7 x 7 + 7 cats = 224 legs
    7 backpacks = 1568 + 2 = 1570 legs per girl
    7 girls = 10990 legs

If you want to talk maths then there are 10990 legs. Otherwise this is just another one of those questions you can use to impress a 5 yr old.

Actually there are no legs because buses don’t run a 3am in the morning do they?

I see you haven't gone to bed yet wongo!

So if shedhand has declared how many have got it correct at this momment perhaps you ought to look at the voting percentages.

Me, I will wait till I go to bed it should get me off (to sleep) quite quickly.

Only 4 have got it correct on the forum at the present time and there are 11 of you in your group, sooooooooooooooo.

So it must be in your group, 4 of you have got it right

Shedhand like many things there is always more than one way to skin a cat.

So with all these cats how many violins strings could be had???

What age are the GIRL's as you have to be over 21 to be able to get your bus drivers licence in OZ so a girl wouldn't be a bus driver so once again the figure is out. If she is over 21 she isn't a girl she is a woman .

If the answer is only a number its not very funny. so I think something about a german fish should be deemed the correct answer.

My wife said there are no legs on a bus, only wheels. She's a damn Capricorn and that's NOT the answer.
For those who can't add 2 and 2 I'll put a multiple choice poll in as well. Just have a punt.
    OK...
Once upon a time there was a bus. It was parked at a bus stop...just parked there OK? The bus had cantilevered seats..no legs, OK?

It wasn't very long before seven live, complete adult women (or it could have been men) each of them struggling under the weight of 7 very large backpacks, happened upon said bus. One of the women (or it could have been men) said to the 6 women (or it could have been men) bloody oath these 7 large backpacks I'm carrying are damned heavy with these 7 large, live, complete cats inside each backpack with 7 smaller live complete cats for each large live complete cat stuffed in with them. You 6 must be struggling under the burden of your own 7 backpacks containing 7 large, live, complete cats inside each of them along with the 7 smaller live, complete cats for each large live complete cat inside.

They agreed this was so. Whereupon the first woman suggested they commandeer the said bus. At which point each of the other 6 stout women complete with both natural legs said "why the hell not".

So each live, complete woman - though heavy set and strong (could have been heavy set strong men) - boarded the aforementioned bus each carrying their 7 backpacks full of the aforementioned multiple numbers of live and complete large
Attachment 63066 and small members of the Felis silvestris catus family.

While they had no particular destination in mind they never-the-less enjoyed busing around Sydney and environs, (I was going to say traipsing which would imply they were walking around inside the bus which is dangerous) but they were on the bus with their load and not inclined to walk any further whilst weighed down by what was - by this time - a heavy load of smelly heaving and very angry cats).

Now as to the total number of warmblooded legs of both species (
Felis silvestris catus and human) it is necessary to also consider how long they were spending on the bus. And in considering this I'm tending to agree that more detail was indeed necessary in the original question. All (I can say is that by necessity it had to be a reasonably long trip due to the need for caution in Wongo's neighborhood. Orientals are known for their appetite for things furry that we (not me Wongo - I am one of your brothers...bugger the gwai lo ) foreign devils regard as members of our families.

It could be assumed therefore that its inevitable that on such an extended journey one or more of the large cats would have gotten very hungry and just may have consumed 1 or more of their offspring or indeed one or more of the offending stout women.

What does all this mean (APART FROM BORDERING ON USELESS DRIVEL)?

Quite simply fellow forumites....bugger all in the big scheme of things.

So, the answer my friends is not in the bloody wind but evident in the dried stools of the surviving cats. However, before the little cannibals started I can tell you all the the correct number of legs extant at the beginning of the journey was....

    10,990.

See Gregs calculation as posted by the clever dick earlier in the forum.

    Bye for now.

    Merry xmas.

hohoho (oops! can't say that)....hmmmm....happy whatever you celebrate.

    Sheddie (The Mad)

Seven women at least 21 years old and less than 60 years old are on a bus (one is the driver..sheesh)and each has seven backpacks. Each backpack has seven large live cats inside complete with legs. For each large cat there are seven small live cats complete with little legs. (For the purpose of the exercise assume they are very strong girls and that cats are allowed on buses).

Question: How many legs on the bus. (only warm blooded legs are counted) i.e. no seat, chair or stool steel, aluminium or wooden legs. No-one is going to gut the cats for violin strings and no-one is going to eat any! (control yourself Wong me old china).

Felicitations and good thoughts for the looming beer and prawn fest (some of you have already started it seems ). I hope everyone over-indulges and is contented. Wong! leave the bloody cats alone..
If you never made a mistake, you never made anything!

OK, getting better, but still not enough information.

    1. "Has 7 backpacks" is not is same as "Brought along 7 backpacks". They may each have (own) 7 backpacks, but didn't bother to bring them along.

    2. Where are the 7 small cats per large cat? It's implied they were also brought along, but not specifically stated. They may be at home wondering where all the large cats have disappeared to. Or out chasing buses.

    3. No where is it stated that all the girls( women) and cats (if indeed there are ANY cats) on the bus have the number of legs normally assoicated with that particular creature. There may perhaps be one or more girls (sorry women) who have tragically lost a leg. Given that we are only allowed to count warm-blooded legs, that means artificial legs don't count. Same story for the cats (if there are any cats... and / or artificial cat legs...)

So from the information given, we can't state with any certainty that there are ANY legs on the bus.

In fact, unless you can post a picture of the bus, I'm reluctant to acccept there even IS a bus.

Now seriously, isn't this a lot more fun then trying to come up with an answer?

I ,for one, certainly never thought the answer was in any way the point of this exercise. No other discussion of the web, re number of legs on buses, seems to be of this opinion either (of there being any point to this exercise) Not unless the answer is in fact funny, in which case that is the point.
I am now going to have a nice cup of tea, in no way connected with the point of legs on cats or buses on legs or anything pointless at all. Do I make myself clear?
