    1) Shingles is a disease, and a shake is what you do to get the drops off.

    2) We billetted the Bundaberg Nippers during the last Qld Surf Titles and they came too and fro for a few days, then split.

    3) Most old woodies get the shakes, but I wouldn't wish shingles on anyone.

    P (It's ok I'm going soon!)

    1. What is the difference between a shingle and a shake?
A shingle is sawn a shake is split

    2. When splitting a billet with a froe do you split it
    a. across the log?
    b. from the top of the tree to the bottom of the tree?
    c. from the bottom of the tree to the top of the tree?

You split it with the grain which means you split the billet from the top of the tree to the bottom

    3. What Australian timbers are suitable for shingles and shakes?

Keep considering this answer as Soundman might like an idea of which timber to use.

AS PUNISHMENT for hijinks in class you can all go and give Al a big sloppy smooch,

Al has to accept whatever b.o. all his kissers have. (even if artificial, applied just for Al)

Aha but s that all a shake can be? I think not my fine pseudo americano, a shake is also the common name for the fine fractures usually found across the grain quite often caused by high gusts of wind or felling the tree across other objects such as rocks or gullies.
I also know of a professional operation where "shingles" are split not sawn, so a difference possibly in the local definition

I know that common old "forest oak" is more than suitable for the task.
