    Default WOODWORKING QUIZ for 23 Nov 04

    Good Morning Friends,
    When working with wood and wanting to make a good quality piece.
    How much sanding is enough? Some say that they only go to 100 grit while others go to the extreme and sand to 600 grit.

    So again I ask how much sanding is enough?

    Respectfully,

    When I do a sanded finish everything goes to 1200 grit wet and dry. Its too late after you finish a job to wish you'd been a bit more particular with your preparation.

    Our furniture polishers insisted that only 120 to 150 grit be used as the finer grits don't allow stains to fix adequately.

    Good Evening Friends,
    The quiz was taken from shop tips in a WOOD Magazine and they state the following;
    In the WOOD magazine shop, we generally sand through 180 grit when applying a film - forming finish. We sand through 220 to give a smoother feel to woods that will get penetrating oiled finish.
    On projects that will be stained, we sand through at least 180 grit using a random - orbit sander, then proceed through 220 or 320 grit on end grain and areas that require hand sanding.

    There you have it my friends, thanks for you support.

    Respectfully,
