Thread: Alternative 8mm Collet for a Festool 1010 Plunge Router.

Festool's genuine collet for 8mm bit (488755) is only $80 if I'm reading it correctly.

Looks like Carbatec is gouging on this item. So we are down to $80. Better but still not cheap.

I can get it from the UK for AU $60.

The collet you are quoting from CarbaTec is not for the OF1010 but the OF1400/2200. That is why it is more expensive.
Unless collets from other routers will fit the Festool - unlikely though - you will have to buy the Festool original. Because the OF1010 has a max collet size of 8mm there is also no option of using a reducing sleeve in a larger collet as is possible with the larger Festool routers. I purchased the 8mm collet for my OF1400 some years ago and have forgotten the high price and now appreciate the quality.

I'm not sure of the situation with the 1010 collets but the 2200 collets are the same as ELU MO177 which later became Dewalt 625 so it might be worth doing some searching around.

why 8mm ..... that is an odd size in this part of the world and may explain the price ..... i've not seen a 8 mm bit offered in Australia.

8mm bits our out there its a EU and metric thing and more are coming on to the market. My router cannot take 1/2" so 8mm is better then 1/4" since it is stiffer and you get them in longer lengths and bigger cutters then you can get in 1/4". I hate imperial and if I can have metric bits all the better. I have purchased metric bronze guide bushings.

8mm shank cutters are also used for the Leigh dovetail jig (although 1/4" shanks cutters can also be used).

Whilst it's true that Festo has always used the same collet fittings developed by Elu & Perles for the DeWalt, CMT, Trend series of routers, this is true ONLY FOR THE BIG ONES.

Specifically, Elu 177 & 177E, CMT, Trend T10 & T11, DeWalt 624 & 625, Festo 1400, 2000 & 2200 routers all have common collets. All will fit each other's collets, plus aftermarket alternatives, such as Eliminator and Muscle Chucks.

As for the smaller class of tools, I'm not so sure.

I DO know that Elu's 96, 96/02, 96E, 97 & 97E, DeWalt's 613, 615, 620 & 621 (UK & Euro models only <USA & OZ models use unique sized collets in common with the DW 626 models>), Perles' OF 750, 900, 1000, Trend's T5, and early AEG routers all use the same collets in 6mm, 1/4", 3/8" & 8mm sizes.

Whether Festo similarly chose the Elu/Perles collets for their "baby" 900, 1000 & 1010 models is unsure. I can recall some years ago marching along to a local Festo dealer with my collection of Elu collets to confirm this. The 1/2" & 1/4" collets from the big machine fitted the Festo. I simply can't recall whether the small collets fitted the baby Festo or not.

I eventually decided to stick with the Elu/DeWalt machines as they (after a couple of decades of use) just felt so much better to use than the rather Weird-Harold eccentricities of Mafell's Festo designs. Plus the huge range of aftermarket accessories available and already in use by me for the Elu/Dewalt tools was the clincher: that's the difference between mainstream tools and low-volume "niche" manufacturers I suppose.

Why not "borrow" an 8mm collet from the nearest available ELU, DeWalt, Trend, AEG or Perles router dealer & try it for yourself? These should be obtainable for a mere fraction of the price of Festo's presumably "badge engineered" alternative. My last purchase only cost a few quid from memory.

I can confirm that the ELU MO96 collet does NOT fit the Festool OF1010.

Did you give Anthony at Ideal tools a call? A very knowledgable chap who will tell you all the goss about Festoolian issues and supply collett as well.
