groeneaj,
When I purchased the Domino, the best deal was Domino + systainer of dominoes and the guides were 'free'. To be honest, I've never used them.
Look around for the best deal.
This week i have used them to add breadboard ends to a table top and I have cut the mortises in the heads of some small mallets. Simple- cut some blocks of hardwood. Bore in with the Domino from both ends. Make up a handle to fit the mortise and you have a mallet suitable for banging those small wooden planes.

Graham,
So you suggest to not get the trim and cross stop unless they come free in a deal?
I'm interested to see what opinions others have.

What I'm trying to decide now Andy is do I get either:
1. The package with the 5mm and 8mm cutters with the Dominos for each size.
2. The package with the 5mm cutter, 5mm Dominos, and the three stops.
Both packages are around the same price. So I guess my decision is do I get the extra 8mm cutter with no extra trim stops, or get the trim stops with just the 5mm cutter?
Most of my work is on timber 15mm - 25mm thickness. I guess for the wider thicknesses I will need to 'double side' joint the 5mm Dominos?
The most immediate job I will have for the Domino is joining some rails to legs on a coffee table (in addition to butt joints which I know it will do on its own). Will it do this without the stops?
I've then got another plan in mind which I will have multiple 'uprights' say 20mm wide between the top and bottom rails. I gather I'd need the trim stop to mortice in the end of skinny material?
In summary:
I guess what would be of a great help Graham is if you can tell me what joints you have been doing with the basic kit, prior to reaching out for the additional stops?
Thanks everyone!!!
Nathan.

Hey Nathan,
when you say 3 stops is that the trim, cross and the one for rounded stock, or the one for the use in the vertical position, which I believe comes standard ?
Do you have a link for the kit with the 5mm and 8mm cutters with the dominos to suit?

I mean the one that comes standard (ZA-DF500), plus the Trim Stop LA-DF500 and Cross Stop QA-DF500.
The 5mm and 8mm kit is from Ideal Tools FESTOOL DOMINO STARTER KIT (DOMINO DF 500 Q-PLUS AUS) in a SYSTAINER, plus the following accessories...
I'm comparing that package to this one, plus $30 for the 5mm Dominos. Difference is $46 FESTOOL DOMINO Joiner Set Version (DOMINO DF 500 Q-Set) in a SYSTAINER
My purchase place pretty much comes down to Ideal Tools. Primarily, they sponsor here and give input, and Carbatec don't seem to offer packages (at least on their website), and VEK tools have shops up the road from home and around the corner from work, but they aren't as competitive with price.
Nathan.

The kit with the 5mm and 8mm cutters with dominos is $1582 ($19 for 5 and 8mm dominos and $49 for 8mm cutter-special price. plus $1485 for the machine, 5mm cutter and standard stop)
For $1698 you can get all the cutters and dominos. Seems like a better deal to me. Plus you get the free domino course.

It's been a while since I got my domi, but I think the package I got is still around. You get the domi in its own systainer, a systainer with all the sizes of dominoes and 4 cutters, 3 different attachments to help with centering small stock, and spacing dominoes along a long length without measuring. I wasn't sure what I'd end up using, but as it turns out, I've used everything. I use all the different size dominoes. It wasn't much extra to get this "complete" package. I was already spending $$$, so a bit more didn't make much difference.
I'm sure you've looked at the various youtube videos, but this one gives a quick overview of how you'd use the different attachments.

Remember that you'll need a shopvac to connect to the domino. I've never tried to use mine without one, but I've heard that it clogs up after only a couple of mortices if you don't have a shopvac. Mine has the auto-on function. When I turn the domino on, the vacuum starts. When I turn it off, the vac runs for a few seconds to clear the line.

Thanks for the video Allan
Where did you get your auto-on function switch for your shop vac? Or do you have the festool shop vac which has that feature already?
I must be misreading or missing something then.
This shows $1485 for just the 5mm cutter, additional stop and the machine
FESTOOL DOMINO STARTER KIT (DOMINO DF 500 Q-PLUS AUS) in a SYSTAINER, plus the following accessories...
Then next to it it shows additional extras
- $19 for 5 and 8mm dominos
- $49 for the 8mm cutter
Or is this a forum only deal?
Confused ????

The Domino, 5mm cutter and additional stop is $1398
FESTOOL DOMINO Joiner (DOMINO DF 500 Q-PLUS AUS) in a SYSTAINER
And the Special starter kit is $1485. The prices in red are the new special starter kit prices and added to the $1398 = $1485
Im sure Anthony from Ideal Tools will come on sometime and clear it up, but that’s the way I see it.

Can you buy an accessory that turns the vac on when the tool turns on?
