    Default Cordless Drill

Has anyone sprung for the new cordless drill with the brushless motor? I thought there would be a few more out by now but this does appear to have happened.

    Default drills

They strike me as excessively pricey and I am not one to skimp on tools. There are plenty of cheaper substitutes that do as good a job, in my opinion.

If you're looking for other cordless tools: the Panasonic 14.4Volts Li-Ion impact driver also has a brushless motor.

Thanks Frank-Jan. I don't see any reason not to buy brushless as they will all go that way soon. I wonder if they are available in Oz yet. Google might help here.

They are the way to go. Efficiencies are so high as they use a 3 phase controller and have no parts to wear except the bearings.

The rest of the world is just catching up with brushless motors. They have been used in RC aircraft for some time now and are their power is absolutely astounding.

Default I have C12 with all the chucks

including the Depth Stop Chuck. I think it's a great drill and worth every penny.

It has more torque than I expected for a 12V drill. The torque is very controllable.

Both the drill and battery charger are heat protected. If you overheat the drill, it just beeps and stops, rather than destroying itself. If you stick a very hot battery in the charger, the light flashes red and just waits until the battery has cooled down. Then it charges as normal.

The quick-disconnect chucks are reason alone to buy the drill. I've used all of them many times in many combinations to get me out of tight spots (literally and figuratively). One trick I use is to stick a drill bit in the standard chuck and screw bit in the Centrol-tec chuck. Then you can pre-drill a screw hole, quickly change the chuck and screw in the screw. That doesn't sound like a big deal, but that saves you LOADS of time when you have to clamp up a fixture or jig, then drill, then install the screws. And then repeat the process say 30 times (I did).

Finally is the new Depth Stop Chuck. I LOVE it. After using it for a few minutes, I packed up my Senco collated screw gun and shoved it on a garage shelf. And haven't touched the Senco since. Here's a Depth Stop Chuck review (with pics) that I posted on the FOG forum: http://festoolownersgroup.com/index.php?topic=331.0

    Regards,

    Dan.
