    Default Protool grinders???

hi folks, i want to buy a new grinder, the old makita has an on/off switch which i have accidently hit a few times, the last time left a nasty gash on my hand.

i am worried about co-workers and apprentices using it now, and i like to have safe tools for myself too.

i will be using it for cutting steel, blueboard, roofing, etc...

the protool grinders look pretty good, has anybody bought one of the protool grinders, do they think they are better than metabo or bosch?
did it come with a systainer?

if the 5 inch grinder is good, i will buy the 9 inch grinder soon after....

    regards, justin.

    Hi Justin-

I replaced my burnt out Makita 5" with a new Protool unit (not variable speed, but with no-tools wheel change capability). The Makita switch failed after less than two discs worth of ocassional hobby use. After I disassembled it I was dismayed at how crappy the switch was.

I have used up two discs so far on the Protool and can report that so far it is better than expected. It is smooth-noticeably more so than the Makita. It has a soft start and does not bog down when pushed. So far I have used two cut-off discs to section some large cast iron members 8mm thick-no dramas. The Protool was about 2 1/2 times the price, and it seems to be at least 2 1/2 time the tool.

The tool did not come with a systainer-I can't recall if it was an option or not. On edit: It is the AGP125-14D which I think was around $239.00

the protool grinders dont usually come in a systainer, about 6 years ago there was a combo of a 9" & 5" in a maxi systainer some of those kits we split up so we might have a maxi systainer with the metal insert in the warehouse. Your other option is to buuy a maxi systainer & go to clark rubber & buy some high density foam to cut out the shape of the grinders so they fit into place.

the protool grinders target market is the metabo grinders &they stack up pretty good in quality against them. If you are using them for cutting fibro or bricks i would say to stay away from the electronics due to the dust.

Try getting the agp125-9 this model was brought out as a limited edition, it says it has a 900w motor on the label but is actually a 1050w. This machine just had a label change from the agp125-10 for marketing purposes

thanks greg and vek tools for the replies.

i like the 14 D model because it has the plug it cord.
    should'nt they all have it?

vek tools has a good point about the electronics and the fibro dust, so maybe i will have to buy a different model.
i cant find the model vek tools has recommended on the protool website, i assume the recommended model is an older model, but it looks like it could be fine for my needs.

    regards, justin.

i was going to buy one the other week but you can get a 9in makita for $200 bucks,

my boys will stuff it up even if its a pro tool or ozitzo, so the makita seemed like a good deal.

most of my festool gear stays at the factory with me or gets taken to site and brought back the next day the only exception to this is our TS55's which get used all day everyday alrthough the newest one always stays in factory not getting used onsite

    The usual disclaimers.

Seen Protool grinders being sold off at the local ISG store (called Waugh's Industrial) here in Bendigo in what they call the "bargain bin". Recon they cant shift them.

Already have my quota of working grinders, otherwise I would have picked on up.

Havent checked to see if this is just one store in the ISG group selling them off or whether they are having a catalog sale.

I will never be the person who has everything, not when someone keeps inventing so much cool new stuff to buy.

From an early age my father taught me to wear welding gloves . "Its not to protect your hands son, its to put out the fire when u set yourself alight".
