ETS Shock and wont work
Hello,
I recently purchased an ETS 150/3 EQ-Plus sander. I have it connected to by Ridgid shop vac using the rockler expandable hose, nothing fancy. I start sanding and within 30 seconds i've received 2-3 light shocks, then the sander stops working all together. I try different plugs, and get no juice. I returned the first one for this reason, and the second one is doing the exact same thing. This makes me think its my house (new as of 4 months ago) or something else.
Why am I getting shocked, why is the tool not working and is it damaged? How can I prevent this? I need to get this table top sanded ASAP. This hasn't happened with my DeWalt or Ridgid sanders... so i'm a little disappointed to upgrade to these almighty sanders and have these issues immediately.
PLEASE HELP ME

Not sure if the hose you're using is an anti-static hose?
If not, I wonder if it might be static buildup & discharge through the hose frying the sander?
What do Festool have to say (give them a call and run the scenario by them)?

I have the same sander never had an issue like the one you have ,nor with any other Festool tools I have .Can only suggest you contact Festool for a response to your issue.
Try the FOG forums as well the folk on there may also be able to assist.Johnno

I would absolutely suspect your vacuum hose because apparently the sander is also getting shocked enough to fritz the electronics. Either that or something is happening with your Rigid vac. Since it is a new house, can you check your GFCI breaker for proper functioning? I can’t imagine you getting a 120v zap repeatedly though.
Have you tried that hose with either of your other sanders? In the dry heat of winter?
I have lots of Festools and both their anti-static hose and the 32mm black normal hose. I have used the big hose on my belt sander and it was like getting tasered there was so much static. I didn’t like it that much.

My other sanders (ridgid and DeWalt) have never shocked me. Ever. It is not an anti static hose. I’m in Utah and it’s super cold and dry.
I did contact festool and they said it likely was the set up and conditions and that I likely fried the electronics.
that’s incredibly underwhelming considering the price tag on this sucker. I’ll be returning it for something else. Because if it’s that finicky i don’t want it
I appreciate your response and suggestions!

It is the sander and not the hose. Festool recommend anti-static hoses for their vacuum cleaners because they are not earthed the same way as other makers. But this is not, as far as I am aware, an issue with their power tools. Further to this, they sell non-anti-static hoses. Clearly these are fine to use with vacuum cleaners from other makes.
Note, I have two Festool. sanders, and one was used long before I purchased a Festool vac.

Pretty unlucky to get two dud sanders. I have an ETS150/3 and have never been shocked using the Festool anti-static hose. As I have mentioned, the normal hoses do create static shocks. I don’t have any other brands to compare though, so maybe the 150/3 sanders are particularly sensitive to static?
In my story of getting shocked from the black hose, that was using a Festool BS75 belt sander. It was unaffected, but I was not.
There are other options available…perhaps a Mirka? Derek has one and he likes it. In fact, everyone I have heard review the Mirka are fans.
