Festo Jigsaw - worth a repair?
My old Festo PS1E jigsaw went bang on me the other day. And I mean BANG!! scared the heck out of me. It a great old piece of kit. Done some work but hasn't been abused (see photo). Is it worth getting an overhaul or will the cost likely warrant consideration of buying a new saw? - given my retirement status that will mean replacing it with an Aldi unit !! Any suggestions on a service contact in the NSW Southern Highlands (can do Goulburn or Canberra) that won't charge an arm and a leg very very much appreciated.. Cheers Phil

Yep, that's what I've been thinking but kind of hoping that there may be a local person that can fix

A lot depends on what you do with the jigsaw and how much it gets used.
Given the age of the Festo I would ask if parts would be available? (Up to 10 years yes, older - maybe.)
What are the likely repair costs going to be - or rather how much do you want to spend?
A new Festool will cost about $500 http://www.idealtools.com.au/festool...aus-by-festool although other brands can be had for under $200 http://justtools.com.au/bosch-jigsaw-550w-gst75be or even under $100 for a basic tool http://justtools.com.au/bosch-500w-e...y-case-pst700e (shipping may add to these prices). If you want a barrel type as per your Festo they seem to be a bit less than $300. http://justtools.com.au/makita-barre...-light-4351fct
Without know what needs repair or replacing on the Festo it is hard to say what to do. If you could tell that it was seized or not that might give you an idea of what the fix might be.
Let us know what you decide.

Yep, you pretty well nailed my concern. The unit has seized so I suspect that sending it off to a repairer will just be a waste of postage. Appreciate the links to the alternative saws, I'll check them out. The Festo belonged to my dear old dad so there is a lot of sentimental value attached to it (I'd guess its closer to 15 years old) hence why I haven't just slung it out. He loved his Festo equipment (lucky for me!!).

Repair
It's simple to fix if one knows what is shot.
Here is the parts diagram: http://ekat.festool.de/EKAT-Service/...dnr=&nodeId=29 and prices are on the right.
Bits can be ordered from any Festool dealer (perhaps they have to be premium dealers?) anyway... Combined Electrical here in Canberra will sell you the parts with no hassles.

That's a great idea - it would be great to have a play and try and fix it myself given the sentimental aspect. Unfortunately the link took me to an expired page ("10 mins of inactivity"). Could I trouble you for a copy of the pertinent page?
Many thanks for the idea and taking the trouble to link.
Cheers
Phil

Sorry about that expiry. Try this http://www.festool.com.au/Services-S...-Parts-Diagram and navigate to the right area, it's under jigsaws, unsurprisingly.
Looking at the diagram it looks very easy.

Hi Phil.
That's a shame it went BANG!. May I suggest giving Festool Service department a call (1300 063 900) and discuss, especially availability of likely parts. The call will cost you nothing and give you a better idea of it's value to or possibility to resurrect.

Thanks NT, sorry for the late response - just back from hols.
I pulled the saw apart this morning and aside from a capacitor that 'exploded!!!' the rest of it looks in really good nick.
It looks like a fibre bush at the top of the blade wore out and let the lubricating grease seep through. In turn, the grease mixed with sawdust and worked its way back up into the head unit jamming the workings. This obviously placed too much strain on the electrical's - causing the big bang.
Thanks for the phone number, I'll give them a call to see if I can get a replacement capacitor and fibre bush. Fingers crossed that it will be an easy fix
Cheers
Phil
