    Default Festool and Makita Tracks

I have read countless posts that state that you can use these tracks interchangeably so thought I would do a quick review as I have been caught out with this advice.

I have some Festool track on loan at the moment (intention to buy) so thought I would do some testing.

While it is partially true that you can use either track, accessories don’t fit and I don’t think you should mix and match if you want Festool outcomes.

    Points to note:

It is true that the TS55 will work on either Festool or Makita track however it appears to me that you get a better cut with the Festool track as it is a better fit.

The F and M tracks can be connected together however you don’t get a seemless connection and when you move from one track to the next you get slop

Makita clamps don’t fit Festool track.

Makita track connectors don’t work as well as the Festool connectors on Festool track

Festool track accessories that use the outside rail will not fit Makita tracks as the Makita’s outside rail is slightly wider (different design) to the Festool.

While I was hopeful I could keep my Makita track equipment when I upgrade to Festool and save a few $$$’s it appears that for best results and full compatibility it needs to be Festool all the way.

I needed another track for my Festool saw today so went to Total Tools to get one, the Festool one is $215 and the Makita $99
I got them both out and there is more play in the Makita one but you can adjust that out with the cams on the solepate and it seemed fine, the problem for me though is I am jumping between different track lengths so if I had one of each I would have to adjust it each time, if you had all Makita tracks I would say it is ok
Needless to say I paid the Festool tax and got the one that matches my others.

As a a side note, I have a mate who has had a Makita tracksaw for a couple of years and recently changed to Festool
He said they are definitely a better saw

    And they'd want to be.
