    yeah on a 2400 x 1200 sheet 5 or 6 pieces a 100mm wide x1200

you just got to make sure you have support under piece you are cutting so it cant fall away and the off cut

    A Multifunction Table

Or when cutting off the MFT, almost anything. Either four pieces (two under the workpiece, two under the scrap), or three pieces (one under the outside edge of the workpiece, one under the outside edge of the scrap, and one sacrificial piece under the saw line.'

My choices for scrap to use under the panel have been: ply, MDF , 19x40 battens, off-cuts of last workpiece, melamine, and so on.

I have never tried the sheet of compressed foam or polystyrene like John Lucas in the States does. Good idea as a semi-permanent workshop solution for many I am sure, but I don't like to waste material where I can avoid it, and buying sheets of this stuff to cut-up and throw out is not for me.

Recommend you do not use a workmate. Assuming you were silly enough, you could cut through the workpiece and the workmutt and have the whole shebang collapse underneath you.

    Ahem.
At least, I suppose it could

I'm late to the party, but I've successfully used cardboard on a folding banquet table. Works great.

Anthony, I think you are assuming that you cut through the polystyrene with each cut. No, you are only scoring the top surface. I don't know what is available in Aussieland, but in the states, this is available in a wide variety of thicknesses. I have a sheet of 2-inch (50 mm) polystyrene that I lay down on the shop floor when I need to work on large pieces. This 4x8 sheet will last for as long as I need it, or until I accidentally break it.

I use a sheet goods table that I made from 4X2's and banquet table legs. I then lay a 1 inch thick foam insulation sheet on top and the sheet goods on top of that.

As above, works well on the shop floor, too (but I don't--easy to get down but getting up again. )
    Cheers,

    Bob
