Default Hire Domino or have someone cut them in - Brisbane

Hi Festool lovers, I'm putting together a project with some mitre joints in thick slabs that i want to get maximum strength from.

I'd like to use dominoes rather then dowels or a spline/biscuits but its way out of the budget to buy one.

Does anyone in Brisbane have one I can hire or I can bring the pieces to you and have you cut them in (Probably easier than me figuring out how to use it all anyway).

Open to alternatives as well if someone can point me to other ways to make the joint stronger. (I do also plan on adding some secondary bracing)

    Thanks, Adam

HI AF76, just thinking out aloud, where in Brisbane? how thick is the slab (ie DF500 or DF700 needed) typically thickness divided by 1/3 = domino thickness. A drawing to give an idea, timber used etc. All that info might get someone on board. Cheers

Why don't you buy one that way you have it for all time. And I don't mean a festool (that one needs to own a gold mine in order to buy), there are plenty of other quality brands.

Maybe try your local club - our club Domino gets more use than most of the machinery in the place!

Can’t you rout out slots in each face and fit loose tenons? Essentially a Domino is a precision loose tenon system; it’s genius and expense relate to its versatility over multiple different applications but you can make a set of one-off jigs that will replicate what the Domino will do.

This is a start, it's not hard to do. There's plenty of other instructions on the 'net if this one doesn't do it for you.

I'm in the Redlands area if that is of any help. I have the smaller Domino machine.

Send me a PM if that is helpful.

No one but Festool makes a Domino. They invented it and still own the patent.

Other alternatives are biscuit joiners, Lamello Zeta, Mafell Doweller and Triton make something as well. The Lamello and Mafell are more expensive again than the Domino.

If you don't have a domino and are willing to put in a little time, here is a very good router jig for making domino joints. She goes through the full process and has plans available Mini Mortising Jig for LOOSE TENON Joinery! No Domino required! You can even use your trim router! - YouTube

I happen to have a DF500 so I haven't tried her domino jig. It does however, look like it could do almost everything the domino can do for a fraction of the cost.
