Thread: OF2200 - honest opinions?

I can only speak for the Festool OF2200 here, but I recommend exploring the OF2200 by doing two things:
1. Look into the accessories for the OF2200. How many of these might be useful for you, there are many, but maybe just one may may be of particular interest, like the guide rail adapter (and associated stepped base) enabling you to use the OF2200 on Festool guide rails. Maybe another more basic accessory like the chip deflector.
2. As someone else suggested, get one into your hands to get a demo. Take out the router bit and put in another one. Fit the parallel fence and guide rail adapter. I love the bit changing ratchet system on the OF2200, making router bit changing a lot less of a hassle and no knuckle busting or loss of skin. Fit a really large router bit and see how comfortable and well balanced you think the OF2200 is.
I have one recommendation for using the OF2200. Fitting a 36mm ID hose nozzle OVER the dust port is a much better option than fitting the 27mm ID hose nozzle INSIDE the dust port. As this router can generate a huge number of large chips the INSIDE solution can cause these big chips to block teh port at the nozzle. The 36mm nozzle OVER/OUTSIDE the dust port solves this when doing big routing.

The accessories are of no use to me, all I use a router for is edge profiling with a bearing - I have a flatbed CNC at my disposal for anything else. The chip deflector would be nice, but my current setup of the parallel fence with some 3mm MDF screwed to it does a passable job (also the only thing I've ever used the fence for, as far as I recall)
The more I think about it, the more I think that it wouldn't be money well spent for me. Maybe if one pops up cheap on ebay I'd consider it.
Thanks all

Sure, if they make a 1700W 1/2" trimmer

That is what I don't understand.
Why do you need 1700 to 2200 W in a trimmer?all I use a router for is edge profiling with a bearing

It's more the 1/2" I need, I use some fairly large bits sometimes; 15-20mm roundover, single pass

CMT make a 16 mm round over bit with an 8 mm shank (catalog number 939.445.11) -- which would fit the Festool trimmers.
a 19 mm round-over with an 8 mm shank might be more of a challenge, but there's a very large selection of other edge profiling bits with 8 mm shanksregards from Alberta, Canada

Then I have to buy new bits (at a massive premium for the privilege of being 8mm), lose 60-70% of the power I have AND pay close to $1000 for the privelage, or I could spend nothing and stick with what I have
I don't mean to be rude, but you're really not helping

also not trying to be rude, but I'm not really sure what you're looking for.
Is it
a Festool router that'll spin a 1/2" bit for edge trimming -- in which case the OF 1400 would seem a better match than the OF 2200
or
any 1/2" router that would be better than your current Hitachi? which begs the question what don't you like about the Hitachi?regards from Alberta, Canada

Really just looking for information; I'm happy with what I've got (soft-start would be nice though), but not opposed to upgrading if I find a bargain.
The OF1400 is out; I like my router handles upright, not sander style
