    Yesssss!
The availability of hardwood was not as prevalent as it is within driving distance here in Melbourne. There was basically one specialty lumberyard that carried every single wood you listed, but they were pretty expensive.
Maybe so, BUT at least you did have such a range available. I doubt if there is a timber supply co ANYWHERE in Aus that has hafl of those timbers available
True, there was a fantastic range of plywood and engineered woods. I have not found the supply of ply here to be lacking
Yes, ply is available but the quality is poor. AFAIK there is NOTHING like the beech 13ply available here in Aus.
The natural disaster in New Orleans and the what seemed yearly hurricanes, floods and massive storms in the south of US soaked up a huge proportion of our construction timber and jacked the price thru the roof for everything else that's available.
    That's understandable though.

I have lived in both places and it's still new to me here. Maybe I don't assign importance to maple or fir because I've been around it all my life.
The thing is, that the US has this timber and others readily available. There is not so much readily available here.

I feel like the wood here is exotic, and so from where I stand, "We've got all the good wood here".
I am pleased you DO feel that way, however when/IF you ever try to make a SOLID timber cabiinet from these "local" woods then you we realise that the price is VERY EXOTIC

At the risk of being political, you should move over there for a while, the country could really use some people right now who love it there.
    I would love to

I had a six week holiday in the US last year. LOVED LA Thoroughly enjoyed a 3000 mile driving holiday through the west coast and midwest states - ABSOLUTELY TREMENDOUS. California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Montana. Stayed in Montana with some friends for four days.

It's all relative where is better.
Sure! and I have to admit it was wonderful coming home to Western Australia. I'd like to think that here in WA we have a similar laid back inclination to life as they do in LA though without the crime levels

    Hope I haven't offended,
    Not at all

I hope life treats you well in Australia.
    Kind Regards

    Peter

I'm interested to see how that does go. Just out of curiosity, what tools would you import to run off of 110v?
    Do nothing, stay ahead

I'd look at a sander, jigsaw and maybe the domino.
