Regreasing Protool gearbox
Hi guys
I have a Protool DRC18-4 TEC (note, best drill EVER) and the reverse switch stopped working. I pulled it apart and fixed the switch, i also cleaned a bit of sawdust off the gearbox area. It has been stiff to get into gears for some time, probably because all the grease for the sliding mechanism was full of sawdust.
After much rooting around i finally got it all back together and selecting all the gears, but even stiffer to change than before, then it quickly got stuck out of 3 & 4.
Obviously I need to take it apart again and reassemble, id like to get as much of the sawdust ridden grease off as possible and add some fresh stuff to the sliding components so it all moves nicely like it should.
When I pulled it apart last night, i only had moly grease handy and inside the drill is the White stuff. -is this Lithium grease???
Presumably im best getting a tube of this stuff instead of using moly, but would like to make sure i buy the right stuff.
I dont know much about the different types of greases out there.
Thanks in advance for any help

I dont believe so. The drill actually belongs to a friend who has left it with me on long term loan, he was happy for me to pull it apart and fiddle so i dare say to warranty has expired.
I am confident that with some fresh grease it will be silky smooth again, but just want to use the right stuff!
The front bearing also looks like an easy changeover, its a small ZZ but i cant see a number without removing it first. (It feels a bit tired)

Hello Andrew
The greases used in the DRC and PDC range of cordless drills are listed below
UniSilikon L250 (White) for the 4 speed gear change ring
Signum SXT 2 (clear) for internal gears
If this is your first time attempting a reassembly of the 4 speed gearbox some patents will be needed, I know this from first-hand experience.
If you require assistance a phone call to us would be easier than trying to explain it here, we also have an 'tool' that could assist you

Hi brett thanks heaps for the info. I wasnt planning on actually disassembling the gearbox, just cleaning and regreasing the gear change ring externally.
Can i just squirt the clear grease inside at the gears without pulling it all apart?
If my local bearing shop doesnt have the right grease i will likely be calling you guys to purchase some anyway )
BTW, you guys have a really nice product there. Very well made, and just so.... German... inside. Not to mention its ability to just about break your wrist if it happens to grab while drilling.
