    Default My 3rd box, getting better ;)

    Hi all,
    Here it is my 3rd bandsawn box. This is made from reclaimed wood. I cannot claim the initial laminating. This was done by machine. These 90x90x1800 laminated Merbau beams were being tested for structual stability next door. Most were broken in half and after sitting in the weather for 3 weeks (testing for glue delamination) were destined for the tip. I cut the broken section out and ended up with a few 200mm long blocks. I was unsure how it would cut, if it would hold together etc. But Im very pleased with the results.

    I need to work on reducing snype on the draws ends,
    after careful viewing I can still see some machine marks I missed,
    I forgot to reduce the middle section so the draw fronts arnt slightly in from it. Ill pad this out with felt at the back of the unit this time around.

    I managed to cut two of the draws upside down. I was so happy after managing to cut all the draw segments out of the main body, thinking the hard part was now done, I started cutting the draw hollows out without thinking. It was on the second one I realised id cut them upside down. I had to re glue the innards back in, wait to dry and then recut the hollow the right way.

    the other funny mistake I made was one of the draws(tear drop shaped near front) I cut the hollow out level with the draw no with the body. So basically there was no lip now that it was at an angle, anything in the draw would thus fall out as you opened it. I had to cut a slither of wood and glue it in as a side.

    Otherwise as I said I think Im getting better.

    Hi xgrain,
    Looking good, the only thing I would suggest is something like a strip of sticky felt on the bottom of the draws or holes to even out the top and bottom gaps, just make sure you keep them far enough back so they don't show.

    Beautiful Xgrain. Great minds think alike, I also was pleased with how quickly and effortlessly I had cut out the drawers only to find I had cut two upside down ( Mini Chest of Drawers). Oh well, that's why they invented wood glue I guess.

    oo nice idea Duke I have to flock the draw insides tonight I was contemplating flocking the cavity bottoms to "lift" up the drawers but a wee strip of felt sounds much easier

    Cut some of the draws upside down? There is no way that I am going to be the first to say that he thought that was normal down there. I just couldn't bring myself to say owt like that, 'onest

    Lovely box! I really like the design. To make the draw fronts align with the front I either cut a very thin slice off the front if it's a flat fronted box, or cut a sliver of wood the shape of the drawer/s and glue it into the back of the box.

    That's a lot more complicated than my 3rd box, well done !!
