Default Just Got A New Bandsaw....

Looking forward to doing some of these bandsaw boxes or some simple ones at least. Hope my saw is up to the task It's a Rikon made Craftman 12 inch bandsaw with 3/4 HP and 7 inch resaw capacity. A few pics:

One of my biggest questions is where do you guys get your big thick wood at for these things? I can only buy 4 x 4 sticks around here. Do you havest these yourself or buy it online?

Hi Corey, good looking BS. You will have to be carefull with maximum thickness of stock. I have a 2hp and particularly with the 14tpi blades it has to work.

Stock is always a problem, here is a Thread I posted asking the same question.

Have fun with the new saw.

Look for fallen limbs, neighbours chopping down trees, swaps with other woodworkers to mention but a few.

    Hi Boxinator
4 x 4 is ok, you can laminate two pieces together but watch the match of the grain, machine the two surfaces and clamp the pieces tight

I would not recommend green wood, when it dries and shrinks you will finish up with jammed draws and contorted shapes.

    hey boxinator,

nice bandsaw! that work light will come in handy when cutting bandsaw boxes (if your following a pattern that is...)

trying to find wood large enough can be a challenge. i was lucky enough to find a few pieces recently at trend timbers in sydney. they were in the "turning blanks" section but im guessing that was just a segested use.

i usually laminate boards together. if you match the end grain cairfully you actually get some really nice patterns so dont be turned off by the thought of laminating. i only have a 10in bandsaw with a 5in cutting height so i usually laminte 5 board 5in wide and 3/4 thick (length depends on what im making). remember to use plenty of glue and clamp well!!!

you are going to have a lot of fun

Default If you're new to bandsaws, I strongly suggest

learning to tune it for best performance. There's a fellow near me who produces amazing bandsaw boxes using a 9" bandsaw. I considered that bandsaw a toy until I saw his work. He has really learned to dial it in. My favorite source of information is 'The Bandsaw Book' by Mark Duginske. I'm sure by now the info is available on the web, but Mark was the first to make the info available.

    Hi Corey,
Looks like bas 350. I have one. Quality blades make a big diference. I recently got a 1.5 tpi blade and ran the machine on the slow speed thru 150mm hardwood with ease.

As for timber you either buy or look around in your neighbourhood for logs etc. To process logs before the bandsaw I bought a jointer. With the right blade after squaring the logs I can cut very accuarately and really use the available timber.

Spend some time to learn the machnine..have fun.

    cheers

Hi Conwood, here it is sold as the BS 300 but I am having difficulty with getting a 1/4 blade to track in it. It will track in the middle on the top and not on the bottom and there is no way I can get the thing adjusted so the lower side bearings are behind the gullets of the blade. No more adjustment room and they are right with the teeth of the blade. No matter what i do it's making a hell of a noise like something is scraping inside. I have it tensioned to the scale for 1/4 blade. The 3/8 blade it came with it will track to the middle of the wheels and adjust on the bottom properly but it doesn't run smooth at all and takes a mess of time to get rid of the noise if I do. Techs are coming on Monday. Did you have any trouble getting small blades to track?

    Hi corey,

Have you tested that the wheels are co-planar? I found I got nowhere until I took that step.

There is a thread in the bandsaw section here about it, but on a different saw...

Woodbe, I haven't tested that nor do I know how to I guess if that is the problem I will let the manf worry about it as I paid for 2 years in home service. I need to get a good book on the subject and learn to fine tune it but for now I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem here.

    Thanks!
    Corey
