    Default Bandsaw Box - RIP

G'day all, This is a story about a BS box Recovery In Progress, just about a Rest In Peace. Not to many display their boo-boo's But this actually turned out ok.

During my first several boxes a year ago I decided to use a larger pattern with longer sweeping curves to get use to the saw and cutting technique's so I choose a pattern by LKV, Andromeda. It's approx 11 - 12" long and 5" high.

With the outline cut done, a long smooth cut, time to go to the first internal drawer cut, which basically follows the first outline cut. Everything going quite good until I hit the first top right turn. Then bang, the blade did a quick turn and produced a few cuss words. I continued down to the lower left out cut of the drawer with the idea of a slight design modification. Couldn't figure out what happened..

So I continued on, cutting the top of the left drawer, followed thru to the top right and started a curve to the top right, bang! Another runaway to a sharp point. After a few frustrating moments and a bit more cussing I finally finished the cuts - a looong way from perfect. In fact a bit of a mess.

I tried some cut and paste but that idea didn't work out. Finally decided to remove the top altogether. I have plans for you!

In photo 5 I see the problem, the blade was bowed. And decided to do the cavity anyways. Photos 6 thru 12 are the finished 'saved' box. The finish is shellac, 1st coat cut with 20% metho, 2nd with 10%, and 3rd as is. The drawer pull is ebonized pine, using a dip into a cup of Tea, allowed to dry for 5 minutes then several drops of India Ink - dried overnight and a bit more India ink and clear shellac.

My wife said 'I want that box', with all the cussing I won't let it go.

    Glenn.

Great recovery Glenn, and beautiful finish. As far as relatives claiming ownership, I have three nieces that I constantly have to beat off with a stick.

You've proven once again that there is no such thing as making an error, those so called "bad" occasions are in fact opportunities for innovation - Well done!

Great story Glenn with an excellent ending and nice finish on the box.

Its nice to see I not the only one wrestling with a bandsaw and a mind of its own.

    Keep the boxes coming.

    thanks everyone,
I think that the blade got a Bow in it during the cut, good possibility my tension was a little slack or feeding a bit fast. That beetle pine is softer in the 'infected area', was using a 3/16 x 10tpi.

The cut off has its design - A hinged lidded drawer that will have a base to sit on, probably the same type of timber or cedar. The curve / bow and blade chatter can be seen in the pics below.

Nieces and Nephews - Took a box to my sis this weekend (birthday), haven't seen her for a while. And just happens that 6 Grt-nieces and nephews were there, all teens - more box projects on the way. They were quite happy..
