Default One of my bandsaw boxes for display..!

    Hi again,

And thanks for your two replies. I bought a book over the internet from the USA called Building Beautiful Box With Your Band Saw, an excellent book. I have now made all the boxes in the book and would like to share the outcome of one of these with you. This is the photo on the cover of the book and my favourite one, I've actually made a few of this particular one. In the book it is called the "Tsunami". I've used camphor laurel timber for this, with one coat of liquid bees wax and several buffed on coats of wax.

In my previous post I said that I just obtained some huon pine and sassafrass from a trip to tassie. Well I can now report that the sassafrass is a very hard timber, after breaking two of my bandsaw blades within a very short time trying to fine cut this. I do admit that I was cutting thru over 5 inches thick and trying to do tight curves.

Paul, nice looking box. I don't know what the others in the book look like, but this definately is attractive.

    Thumbs up

That came up well, Paul. There are some good designs in that book.
What size bandsaw blades are you using? I'm surprised that you're breaking them so often.

    Default Blades,...!!

I use 1/8th blades,...a lot of teeth to the inch. My bandsaw is about 22 years old, but I recently bought an attachment wherein my guide is replaced with another guide that has a slot in a steel wheel, that keeps the blade very tight and it also needs a lot of tension.

Maybe there is another reason, but the sassafrass seemed to be so hard and made my blade really work to do tight corners, even burning the timber.

    Always open for suggestions....!

could the number of teeth per inch cause this ?
I would think that cutting 5" thick material, would be better accomplished with a lot fewer teeth per inch.
But then, what do I know, I am totally green at this, and am still only just reading my book on bandsawn boxes. Have yet to try and get some timber and dip my toes into the water, so to speak.
I was contemplating using a 1/4" blade with 4 hook skip teeth.
If that is no good, please also let me know

    Paul,

Read page 13 of your Building Beautiful Boxes book, it recommends which blade to use and the TPI, 3/16"-10TPI and says a 1/8" blade cannot handle thick wood.

Generally the thicker the wood the less TPI.

Nice looking box by the way

I have a 1/8 x 5TPI that seems to work OK - I reckon something like that would be fine for Sas.
