    Default Beginner bandsawn box

After asking for advice on blade selection in an earlier thread, I need to live up to the promise of posting some pics of my work. So here is my first (successful) piece.

Done in a hurry as a present for my niece (30th b'day) - a few weeks ago now. I'm fairly happy with the outcome all things considered. Silky oak and jarrah.

Looks very good for a first up effort Dabbler. The shape is good and I like the level of rounding that you put on the edges to make the from look softer. I am sure it will be well received. It is also pleasing to have it staying in the family. I ended up selling my first box at a market and looking back now it would have been a good idea to keep the first one to see a progression, at least I have photos.

There’s something very earthy and natural about this. Its brilliance is its simplicity.

    Thanks for the comments guys.

    Jonzjob - blade was 1/4" x 4tpi and piece size is approx 10cm (W) x 9cm (H) x 8cm (D)
Niece grew up around timber so really appreciated it.

Sir S - your comment re keeping it in the family made me realise her Mum (my sister) has my first turned bowl too. The rounded corners were an attempt to hide the rear seam where the back meets the main body. It effectively shifts the joinline from the top and sides to the back. I then realised rounded edges on all faces suits the curved top.

Torchwood - I always enjoy working with silky, it often seems soft and almost clay-like. I used Feast Watson Mastertouch natural carnauba wax buffed betwen several coats. It's pretty close to the raw colour of this silky oak. Had in the cupboard for years but this is the first time I've used it on raw timber.

1/4" x 4tpi std blade not hobby. Decided to source it from a local saw doctor. A single man operation that I drive past most days.

Oh I see, 1/4" for tight curve cuts . How long have you been using that blade?

Bosox, there are blades and there are blades mate. Some are good and some not so good. It depends on which you have, how it is used and a lot of other things. If it's only used with dry softwoods it will last longer than if you only cut oak. If it's mistreated by trying to cut to smaller curves it won't last as long as keeping it to what it is supposed to do. A 1/4" blade will cut a 3/4" radius all day. It will cut smaller if you push it, but not for so long.

So really, your question of how long will a blade last is like asking how long is a bit of string if you get my drift mate..
