    Default First boxes

    Hi all,
Firstly I just realised how terrible the photos are, ill replace them later but at least you get the idea.
The projects goal was to try a few different techniques. First resawing (its 150mm high), laminating, (oregon and pine) bandsaw boxing etc.

I made a steve marin type one with a bit of a twist. I call it a "canoe shelf" cause it looks like a canoe when its on its own and it "floats" inside. Actually when I cut the draw hollow out I had this nice piece of wood and noticed the draw was going to be quite deep. So I needed a shelf to go on top and made use of the tapered sides to hold it in place. The picture shows it up ended( so you can see the depth of the full draw). It normally rests just under the lip, the curves allow it to rotate up n out.

Handle was again a piece of offcut that I reshaped and glued with two bamboo skewer dowels to the front. The wood was all recycled. A piece of oregon(was being used as drill block at work?!!!) Was pretty narly I had to resaw off the gouges, then split because it wasnt wide enough for a box by itself. Again the picture lets me down as i split it dead center with the growth rings and inserted the pine. The pine was dressed from a packing crate.
You will note the back is not trimmed I forgot to cut a back, was so intent on getting the draw out. So I resawed a thin piece of pine and once its dry Ill trim it off .

With that done it was onto a cross bandsaw/jewlery box in the form of a viking longship. The proportions arent quite right but it was really just a prototype. Laminated a stack of plywood. The scrollsawed prows, head n tail were added later with mini mortise tennon like joints. A small box(cabin) was cut out of center prior to cutting the deck line and thus sits proud.( I remembered to cut the back(bottom off first) this time.

The internal hollow that holds the box is overly large because when I cut the sides of the box off before making its hollow it made the box now 2 blade thickness thinner. A bit of felt should cover that up ;0
I cut the lid off and made a new one because I wanted meat to hold the mast which is the handle for the lid.To solve this I made a triangular lid.Its all positioned with loose bamboo skewer dowels. The shields were hole saw and doweled in place(which I have to trim off yet) I sanded them back and ermm "chased the growth ring" well allowed the darker ply to come thru in places to make it look like cow hide shields?

I think next time(I am planning no making a longer one from Huon pine.) I wont make the box removable. Ill router out the inner and glue on the cabin.
Which brings me to my question. Anything else I should do different when committing this to Huon?

Ill apply a dark stain to the boat to give it that dark n sinister viking look

then...well I had these offcuts laying around and just got carried away

    Enter Tron

All in all not a bad days work.

    Woods: oregon, pine, plywood.
Tools: BP355 bandsaw with 6mm blade.
Bandsaw box design by steve marin, with a twist.
    Viking ship design home grown.

Ordered some flocking yesterday just to give that a try on the inside.

    Some more photos for you.

Having now read what seems like hundreds of posts on finishing I sealed the ship with weak shellac and the box with organoil burnishing cause I had some and wanted to see the diff. Ive gone with a home made wipeon poly. Cause I had some poly n turps. 50/50. I brushed the longship but by the time I got around to the bs box I had read a few more posts and started the rag wipeon trick. The ship is still glossy while the bsb is coming up nice n zilky like. Looking at them now I can see many machine marks well they are there to stay now, Im learnt for next time.

Youll notice the longship upside down on the drying rack. a piece of wood with 1/8? drill holes cause bamboo skewers are a tight fit no need for glue. I just drill where I need them and populate skewers accordingly.

The bsb is coming along nicely. I ran 400g over it last night (post this photo) wiped it down with white spirits and after if was dry it was silky smooth to the touch. Another wipe of my mix, dry, repeat. The difference this morning is remarkable, its really starting to suck the eyes in with a bit of depth.

I'll steel wool and wax after a few more coats

this one is quite small, the actual box could maybe hold 3 rings or a few earings.
Ship itsself is about 200mm long.

The huon pine one(other post) is larger at 340mm and should handle a necklace or two.

I am confident you’ll have very good results! It makes me think how will the final product look like?

Finished the flocking of the inside of the longship box last night. First attempt failed. I must remember to seal. I was using acrylic paint as the glue and the ply soaked it in b4 I applied the flock. Interesting effect was that the dark ply was ok and the light ply had no glue which meant the flocking came out in stripes . Anyway re did it all last night.
Which means its finished! Photos soon.

Applied another coat of wipeon to the bbs box ooo looking good now.
I need to re read some more on that finish. I noticed last night if I went over the same spot twice it started to smear, the first wipe had started to "melt" into the previous. I think maybe the little pot of mix is starting to go off..ie more poly than turps causing a thicker wipe.

Maybe wipeon reacted to the previous coat that caused the melting. But I guess everything’s going fine with your boxes. I am a little excited now to see the results!
