    Default California Redwood Box

    Hi All

I normally mess around in the turning forums but earlier this year popped in to have a look at this particular forum. The first post I looked at was Sir Stinkalot's Redgum Box WIP. What can I say, I was inspired and Sir Stinkalots WIP, was more like a tutorial that gave enough instruction that I said to myself "I can probably manage that". So after a couple of months thinking / procrastination I went hunting through the stash to find a suitable lump of wood. Not finding anything of a suitable size I was a little downhearted until I spotted a piece of timber given to me by my brother in law. He had obtained it many many years ago when working as a builder and it and a few others had been sitting around his place gatherng dust. He has said it is California redwood and looking at pics of this timber I would agree that is what it is. It was just short of 2 inches thick but by laminating three sections together I got the size block I was after.

The design is not an original but came frome here.

It took a while to complete and there are certainly a lot of things to improve for my next attempt (especially my flocking technique) but I'm pretty happy with how it has turned out. One thing I love about the curve across the top of the box is where the light and dark sections have different densities the lighter sections have sanded away slightly more than the dark giving a slight texture to the timber. Dimensions are 180 x 110 x 130 (W,H,D) and the finish is danish oil and trad wax.

    cheers
    WH

Excellent Job! I am just now entering the band saw box making sport and hope my first box looks half as good as yours.

Very nice WH, that is one of my favorites for design and cuts especially when starting or for any other time. Have fun.
